Cleaned the valves/ports today at 119K miles.

I bought the car used with 109K a few months ago, and don't know if the valves were ever cleaned. It took me most of the day with breaks and my wife running out for more walnut shells. I've got everything cleaned up and ready for reassembly in the morning. I expect the power increase will be significant based on the narrow/gunked ports.

Really....?

Did you have to stop a lot to let the compressor catch up?

Nice job on the valves, BTW.

Thanks. I stopped to inspect my work every 45 seconds or so and the compressor would kick off after 15 seconds of me stopping. Worked fine for me.

I guess we're gonna play a million questions:

How did you rotate the crank to shut the valves?

I apologize for being a pest, but it looks like I'm going to have to tool up and do this myself considering the lack of shops in my area that offer this service.

Yours happens to be one of the better DIY jobs I've seen so I thought I'd pick your brain.

I appreciate your input.

You have to turn the crank over in the front of the engine with a ratchet. 1/2 drive works best.

That's one way, but considering that he still has his air duct and radiator fan in place in his picture suggests that he may have used a jumper across the starter....

Jumper across the starter is the easiest way. I think people tend to use too much walnut shells for this and that is why they say you need a big compressor. I used about half the 25 pound bag on the first two cylinders, panicked, and probably about 5 pounds on the last four. My car looked vary similar to OP. I found that 20 second blasts with good movement of the wand got 90% of the buildup. My point is that you would probably be fine even with 5 gallon compressor.

That way works too.

Safety wise its probably a better idea to disconnect the battery and take out the fan and intake apparatuses.

As shown in the video below, I used a jumper wire to turn the engine over. Definitely the way to go IMHO. I bought the hopper and tool second hand off Craigslist, so no part numbers. Part throttle output is dramatically better. I didn't beat on it today, since I didn't want to risk blowing off the charge pipe and having to wrench any more. I'll give it some boost tomorrow and report back.

He's the video I followed:

I just saw this inexpensive port/vacuum adapter on a BMW parts website. The adapter is only $39, but it's plastic. I have the metal one.

Just do a google for "B1100004 plastic adapter" and you'll find it.

This was the first adapter I bought and regretted it. it started to break while using it for the second time (on a friends car). It came apart where the vacuum connects. So if you're going to make this a regular maintenance thing, i would definitely go with the aluminum BMW one. It is very high quality.

I have the aluminum one myself and highly recommend it also.
