Lightbulb Spied: BMW M4 GTS production prototype bares its GTS goodies [updated w/ VIDEO]

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW M4 GTS prototype bares now revealed GTS parts
183
COMMENTS

Updated with video from testing at the Nurburgring.

Following on the heels of the M4 GTS Concept reveal this past weekend at Pebble Beach, the prototype M4 GTS has hit the Nurburgring baring its GTS specific parts.

The GTS prototype now sports the manually adjustable carbon fiber front splitter lip (with Acid Orange accent) and rear trunk wing, along with the M Performance carbon fiber rear diffuser.

The painted carbon fiber hood with heat extractor vent is from the GTS Concept, as well as the lightweight, forged and polished 666M style wheels with Acid Orange accent. The tires are presumably the same Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires (265/35 R19 at the front, 285/30 R20 at the rear) fitted on the GTS Concept.

This prototype is likely testing the new water injection system on an S55 engine which is said to have a "noticeable increase in output and torque"

The only camouflage remains on the tail lights, which cover new OLED lights, as already seen on the GTS Concept.

While the GTS Concept did not show its interior, here we see that the prototype is testing with race bucket seats and a roll cage.

Unlike the previous generation E92 M3 GTS which never made its way to North America, the M4 GTS will be available to the North American market.

That looks just awesome IMO. Notice the rear wing is adjusted for max downforce.

I'm pretty sure that the GTS will set some blistering times on the Ring and other tracks. Will be interesting to compare with 911 GT3 times etc. All those "ugly" aero parts are there for downforce, not for appearance (thanks to BMW for keeping true to function before form on a track car).

And thanks for not just making it a poseurs car with worthless styling tacked on that might look good, but doesn't provide max downforce!

cool, look at the angle of that rear wing...that should be some good downforce there. And the lip, it's kissing the Tarmac at breaking and cornering. Can't wait to see some lap times from this car.

I don't think anyone is questioning the function of the aero bits. The overarching reaction seems to be based on the look of it. Functional aero does not have to be ugly.

OP above says wheels are style 660M? I thought they were 666M, typo?

Definitely looks better in white. But that wheel design just screams "Hot Wheels" to me

Lol, explain those hideous wheels with your function > form logic.

Had they simply used the E92 GTS spoiler, it's would have made a world of difference.

Yes it does, if the car is not designed with a wing friendly shape. A wing is a wing, it's by far the best option for performance and they don't look all that different in shape. The difference why a GT3RS looks so awesome with a wing is the shape of the body. A 911 looks naked without a wing, an M4 looks a bit ricey with a wing nothing to do about it since this is a 4-series. The look is of zero interest to me, we know the M4 already, not much you can do with it unless you build something that doesn't even resemble an M4. It's the performance that I'm eagerly awaiting.

Perhaps not, but I have been amazed at the comments in the other GTS thread where most comments seem to not comprehend that the aero bits have a function other than appearance... Perhaps it's the "tuner age" we live in where many enthusiasts only regard splitters, diffusers etc as a cosmetic enhancement to a car...

The 991 GT3 RS also has a very similar rear spoiler/wing. They choose that design for a reason, and it's not appearance that is on the top of their priorities.

If I think of the GTS as a road car (say that this was the look of the base M4) then I shudder at the thought of it's splitter and rear wing!!! But when I regard the GTS as a dedicated track oriented, but street legal car, the look/appearance make sense to me.

Many comments on the other thread has compared the looks of the GTS with "tuner cars". To me that just indicates that they are missing the whole point of what the GTS is supposed to be.

I was commenting on the aero bits. The wheels look great, but I could take a less provocative colour on them

Hey Boss, I think we 100% agree on this one you never know...

When a track car cannot wear track attributes without being called a ricer something has gone very wrong...

The car and wheels don't look that bad now that its not on the terrible frozen grey paint. BMW needs to move on from that frozen color stuff. Its not that special nor does it really look good IMO.
