Crazy Driving (I need a dash cam)

Was cruising at my new motorway speed of 74 earlier on m25 (see previous NIP thread if not a regular) and was witness to some crazy road rage. It was around 7.30am this morning.

Was stuck behind an 07 5 series doing 58 in 4th lane of m25 and had a large van inches from rear bumper. I pulled over to let him past so he could stick to car in front. After half a mile said car didn't pull over so van undertook bmw, pulled back out and then slammed brakes on to about 35mph in order to piss offending driver off. Offending driver then weaved from lane 4 to lane 1 so as to get back in front of van, then slammed on brakes to around 25mph, then went back up to around 40mph (still in lane 4).

For around 5 miles I then watched as van attempted to weave between lanes 1 and 4 to try and get back in front of said bmw, only for bmw to speed up and cut in front of him before he had a chance to pull out into lane 4 (then slow back down to 40).

As they approached the m1 south mimms exit the bmw turned off (to sit in queue of traffic); the van skidded to a halt, driver jumped out and grabbed a metal bar from rear of truck bed.

I had backed off by about 200m by then and was sat in lane 1- unfortunately I have a job and had to continue my journey so can only imagine the final part of the story.

A few questions:

- should I have called the police?
- I backed well of and pulled into lane 2 (all lanes pretty busy at that time) in order to avert risk to me. Would others have done dofferent?
-where can I get a dashcam fully fitted and installed (anywhere from Coventry to Brighton is on my usual route). I'm a retard when it comes to electronics or practical installations so would much rather pay somebody to not bodge it like I would.

As a synopsis the pair of them were (in Brigands wise words) oxygen thiefs. If I had a dashcam I would a) be posting some very interesting footage and b) be sending to the police as this was on a busy motorway and the two of them could well of caused an accident.

Sorry for long post

I tend to spend a lot of my time is the 3rd lane as I drive at around 75mph on the motorways, so I spend a lot of time overtaking, but I also keep a close eye on what's behind me and if something is catching me I pull over so they can pass. I don't like people that won't pull over to let faster cars overtake, so I always try not to do the same. I think you did exactly the right thing in pulling over and staying out of the way, I would have done the same. I certainly wouldn't want to get mixed up with a pair of muppets like that. I am not sure the Police would have done anything, there is never one in the area when you want one.

I'd never really considered a dash cam before but the Aston keying incident made me reconsider. My concern is that I'd incriminate myself more than protect myself. Not from road rage or driving like a cock, but I have been known to breach a speed limit here and there.

There is no installation for a dash cam, you just plug it into the 12v socket under the glovebox and push the cable behind the a pillar and roof lining!

This is a great one for the price:

Transcend 16GB DrivePro 200 Car Video Recorder with Built-In Wi-Fi https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00GRYT5..._1op1vbS4GAXNV

I thought that but then the dashcam doesn't have to record all the time does it? An SD card is easily swallowed in worst case scenarios (jeez I sound like Nick!).

Thanks. So I don't have to remove anything? Just tuck the wire in to the liner?

I was wondering how easy it was for someone to extrapolate your speed based on in car video footage? Not that hard I guess as you could easily time take to pass two points with a known distance.

Would recommend a dash cam after issues we had with a claim- liability accepted after 7 months

Worth calling the police in this kind of scenario but just a question of when or if they respond.

As regards incriminating yourself- dash am isn't a home office approved speed check device or can just turn off speed readings.

For the Aston type cover you will need one with a parking function which has to be hard wired in with power protection. If you like can give you no of the blackvue fitter who did mine

Yep, my dad did it himself and he's a useless fat fingered buffoon when it comes to technical things! Think Jeremy Clarkson!

On a side note, also personally reported someone for driving erratically and very suspect drink driving.

Nothing needs to be removed. Just neatly run the cable out of sight. I thought about having one but also decided it would be more likely used to incriminate me rather than anyone else. They are becoming so popular now though and another reason for thieves to break into a car whether on display or not.

And it would clearly need to be off when other forum users want to know how ARBS and remaps affect the cars performance!

I officially paid £120 or so to have it fitted via blackvue plus front and rear cameras and the power magic box. Total was around the £400 mark off the top of my head.

The fitter was paid considerably less.

Apparently even though he works for a company its on a self employed basis

As said above the micro SD card can be easily swallowed! "oh officer, my memory card was faulty so i chucked it but haven't got round to buying a new one yet"

Plus how much for the kit?

So that's a forward and rear wide angle camera that can record when parked?

Difficult if your hanging outside an over turned car, worst case scenario lets say. I am actually quite tempted having thought about it. About an hour ago a dopey person on a moped cut my mate up on a round about, there was mm in it and these incidents are daily almost.

I've had a couple of incidents in this car alone that a dashcam would have save some bother, namely a 50/50 claim which caused just hassle, and a fault claim which has increased my premium.

Oops edited last post before this came up.

Yes that's £400 or so from the official black vue shop for two cameras DRG650 2ch , power magic box and full fitting. Included a 64gb card which has given some issues as they supplied a cheapo brand which caused the camera to have a fit. Since replaced with a scandisknone which works ok.

Blackvue is ok but think next time might go for the thinkware 750 about the same price but has more features and a slightly wider angle more importantly uses a USB lead to connect the front and rear cameras as opposed to a fragile coaxial which has to be plugged in very carefully to avoid damaging the delicate central pin- which I managed to do.

Works well however even with the privacy glass.
