I just had a bodyshop install a Vanguard catted exhaust along with VRSF catless downpipes yesterday. Last night I took it to a fellow E90 335i owner who works at a Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge dealership so he could install my JB4 and BMS oil catch can. After the install, we took it for a spin. I was just about to drive home when we noticed smoke coming from the engine. We popped the hood, saw a small fire which we were able to extinguish very quickly near the O2 sensors. Since the exhaust/downpipe install, the car was letting off a lot of white smoke which I thought was somewhat normal for a brand new exhaust system. It smelled a little as well, but again, I figured it was due to the new exhaust. I was going to wait a few days, and if the smell and/or smoke didn't go away I was going to get it looked at.

I am guessing it was a bad turbo seal when they installed the downpipes. I also believe that they didn't re-zip tie the O2 sensors after the install.

Sounds like your buddy left a towel or something combustible in there.

That or they didnt route the 02 wires correctly and the wires were burning on the exhaust.

I'd tow it back to that shop and get that car back on the rack. Make sure your there to witness what went wrong as it should be obvious when it gets up in the air.

something similar happened to me before, for me it was the windshield washer fluid that was leaking on the downpipes during a night full of drifting in the snow

The O2 wires route up in the spring clamps along with the vacuum hose starting at the solenoids back to the rear turbo. Well above where they are sitting right now.
