H&R springs with OEM M-sport suspension

I know a lot of people here have them installed, but I've also seen a few comments about them not working so well if the rest of the suspension is stock.

Any more comments/insight on this?

I really want coilovers...but I like the price of springs a whole lot better. Will it improve the handing of my M-sport suspension, make it worse, or no affect- especially on the track?

Thanks for your help!

I can't imagine springs alone will make your car handle that much better. It might lower it, but without matched spring and shocks you're not going to get an optimal suspension setup.

M Sport Suspension < M Performance Suspension < Bilstein PSS10/KW V2+ < Ohlins Road&Track

If price/cost is a concern, then don't bother making any "upgrades". Wait until your stock suspension is worn and then replace at that point.

What about changing the Msport springs out for Mperformance springs, any advantage there?

No. In fact, there may be a disadvantage because now you have a car that is over-sprung and under-dampened.

The moral of the story is if you can't do it right, don't do it at all.

I've seen many guys did this. I did it on my E92 and have no prob at all exept for slight rubbing of course it's because of the spacers that I have. Overall concensus is that it shortens the life span of the stock shocks.

Aaargh...my urge to have the perfect setup is always at conflict with my urge to be cheap. The two don't really get along very well.

Will hold out for COs, thanks again.

What about a cup kit? Costs more than just the springs but not as much as a CO. It's a paired springs and shocks not adjustable though.

If the OP's car is a RWD M Sport, then the "cup kit" to get is the M Performance Suspension kit.

I don't think there's a better performing matched kit out on the market.

You generally get what you pay for. I'm willing to bet a decent sum that the M Performance Suspension is a better overall package (performance, comfort, longevity, etc.). The question comes down to one question: Do you trust BC Racing over BMW engineers on developing suspension components with extensive testing to find the optimal matched pair?

There are two main advantages with the MPS:

1. No warranty non-sense.

2. When they wear away, you can simply replace the shocks/struts. Short turnover. Not the case with the coilover.

Dammit, stop making sense.

Any idea how livable the daily ride is with the M Performance setup?

I'm here at the dealership and parts is telling me that the only difference between sport and perf suspension is the front end, no change in the rear. Does that sound right?

It's also $1300 for the front only...

LOL.

I think they're wrong.

It's front and rear springs and shocks.

Parts are about $1500.

Your dealer basically offered you half the kit for the price of the full kit.

Yeah, that didn't sound right.

I'm wondering how big of an improvement the M Performance is over the M Sport, it's very tempting.

I have M-Perf and like it much better than stock M-Sport. handles better, slight drop so it looks better, and ride slightly rougher over really uneven pavement. My only complaint is i couldn't port install it like all the other M-Perf parts.

As others have mentioned it is a complete kit of front and rear shocks and springs. matched to your vin/options. It even comes with all the nuts, bolts, bump stops, front/rear strut hats, etc. needed to redo the whole suspension.

Well worth the price of admission.

Is it possible to DIY this?

How many hours would a shop typically charge for this?

M Performance Suspension would appear to be a sizable improvement over M Sport without sacrificing too much ride quality.

I would imagine that BMW engineers have done their due diligence and analyzed this setup with rigor. I'm also willing to bet that their kit has been tested more extensively than most other spring/shock combination frankensteined together by your average enthusiast/amateur.

I guess it depends on who is doing the install and what their labor rate would be.

I think it was substantial if you installed this at a dealer. It's fairly labor intensive although it is not impossible. You will have to get an alignment once the springs settle.

Because the labor cost might also end up being the same cost as the parts, I, personally, am only doing this when my Sport suspension dampers are worn out.

I have access to a lift bay, air tools, and alignment machine. It's probably something that I would opt to do myself once there is sufficient DIY knowledge base out there.
