Redline before Break-in

So, I just got my F82 last week and setup the M1/M2 buttons for all Comfort and all Sport+ respectively. Yesterday, I was taking a friend on a ride to show the car, switched to M2 and gave it a little gas (probably 40% pressed). I thought I had put the transmission setting in D-3 (automatic/most aggressive shift), but apparently it was in S-3. :/ Obviously, I was expecting it to shift up before going too high on the RPM as I wasn't giving it too much gas. But because it as in manual mode, the first gear redlined for a second or two. That caught me by surprise, so I shifted up with my pedal resulting in a brutal (in a "wow, so fast it scared the shit out of me" way) upshift and a redline again in 2nd gear (duh!). Only then I realized what had happened and adjusted accordingly.

Car only has like 350 mile on it, but was fully warmed up when the incident happened. So hoping that the accidental/brief redline before break-in isn't going to blow up my engine

NOPE you will be ok, but don't do it again, keep to 5K rpm for now.
With Hot Oil I might add.

You'll be fine. Just remember to not exceed 2000 RPM and 45 MPH for the next couple thousand miles, and it should return to normal.

Ha too funny these cars will not break. My M4 was i got around 400 miles I drive it like I stole it, and my 2015 GT3 was I got around 350 miles or so I was out racing. First few hunderd miles worked all the gears at below 5k rpm not to stress the engine. Two Porsches, and three M cars with the last being a M5 zero issues.

By no means do I suggest anyone take my advice this is just me. Porsche says drive 2000 miles to break in, and when you drive their cars at the experiecnce centers you're racing them with less than 200 miles. Opps the same for BMW in South Carolina, and these cars are sold to the dealers and they go to the public. The key is not to abuse the car, and not some idiot mashing the gas to the floor and losing control of the car.

was above 5k rpm a bunch of times.

Think about the guys that do ED. You think they're going to accelerate sloooooowly onto the autobahn to hit 125+MPH? Please. No one has that type of self control. It's WOT or nothing. Drive it harder. Does a body good.

Actually, you will have no choice but to crawl onto the autobahn, as the traffic jams getting out of the cities (Munich) are worse than LA traffic during rush hour!

And you do know there are 7 gears to choose from on the way to 125+MPH, so staying below 4500 RPMs is pretty easy.

Now, you do NOT want to stay at the same static RPM Range during break in, so I ended up shifting up/down gears and avoided cruise-control during ED. None of which required bouncing off the rev-limiter.

This advise only makes sense if you believe BMW engineers were exercising their German sense of humor when they wrote break-in drive-train instructions. If in doubt - go Google "German sense of humor"...

OP - what you did is not ideal from drive-train break-in perspective, but is not the end of the world. I did something similar when playing with S vs. D tranny modes. Your car will be just fine.

Try to avoid redlining engine, tranny, and diff until the break-in period is completed if you want to keep your car for any length of time. If you are leasing, then let it rip....

Well then I guess I am solely the single human being ever on the face of the planet that will redline my car when I do my ED. You're right!

It's your car, you can do whatever you want with it. The only thing I had an issue with was the 105 MPH top speed, which is easily attainable/surpassed without running to red line. I am not a saint

Thanks for the responses guys ... I wasn't really asking if my car would be okay, but rather sharing my dumbness in terms of the S v. D modes haha. It's been driving fine, I'm sure it can take a hit or two

You shouldn't redline until you get past the break-in phase. It is ok once or twice, but consistently is very unwise.

You should also try not to get past 5000 RPMs until you get your break-in service. Everyone has their own opinion about this but if you want to be safe, as you should be with a 70k car, try not to over do it until break-in service is done. Set it to D1, you would barely get to 3000 RPMs. My Sports w/ D3 barely gets to 5000 (or not even actually).

F8x gets more then enough what you need in Efficient Engine Setting. You can easily get by with not even moving out of this for a good long time.
