VO Might be Faster but AW sounded Better!
Disclosure, just attention getting headline! : )
Seriously though, my July build AW 1M had a gnarly cold start every morning. It would go up to around 1500 RPM and shake the whole house. It would hold it for several seconds then take a step down to about 1200 RPM, then another stop down to about 800 RPM, then idle. You could also hear it a block away. I pick up my German mechanic best friend every Saturday for cars and coffee at 5 am and he could hear my old AW 1M coming a block away. Now my August build, bone stock Canadian 1M only holds the cold start at about 1100 RPM and quickly drops to 800, then idle in a matter of seconds. No house shaking roar. I picked him up yesterday and he didn't hear me coming until I turned up his street at 5 AM. Is anyone away of an exhaust or engine management system flash that affected cold start and or exhaust sound in later build 1Ms? The current VO 1M is supposedly identical to my old AW unit and even has the US EPA and California CARB decal so I doubt it's much different. I am wondering if anyone had some sort of software flash that changed their cold start behavior? The cold start roar was my favorite part of the 1M. Thanks. |

I figured some did. I just wonder if maybe some got a reflash that altered the cold start behavior. For example, my old ZHP used to pause at 3200 rpm during WOT pull but I got it reflashed a couple of months ago and it went away.

One more question guys because I can't recall. I believe the Canadian 1Ms have daytime running lights so both sets of rings and the headlights are always on. I thought only the rings lit up on the US version but it's been so long I can't remember. Can you guys refresh my tired old memory?

Figured it out. Turned off Daytime Running Lights via stalk, now only the rings stay on. Not too bad. I looked for a ROAR symbol to see if I could bring back cold start roar but didn't find one. I think Champignon is right, Canadians are just a bit more low key!

And I think my car behaves like your AW... not sure if can be heard blocks away but when I start it in the morning inside the garage, it can be heard from anywhere in my house and caused resonance..

My car did not come with Canadian plates, although the documents sent with the car included a Quebec temporary registration. I showed it to the lady at the local DMV. She laughed, and said I should be prepared to show my (Canadian) passport if I get stopped by police

Hi nachob, congrats on your second 1M purchase. About the "issue", I would tend to try to figure out reasons for that because as far as I know all 1Ms regardless of specification (I mean Euro or North American, Chinese market might be different) had the cold start like your AW car. When I had the 1M I kept it bone stock for some time and then slowly modded the car up to a point I decided not to pass, essential modded items should still be visible in my sig. Even after all of those installed (most relevant ones as N55 mids, Evolve Race muffler, Evolve intercooler, ER charge pipe, aftermarket air filter) and I assume precisely because I did not change the stock tune and never touched the ECU, the car behaved identical at cold start till the day I sold it.
There was one exception to this and it was right after the stupid Chilean BMW service flashed the car's software for no reason when the car was almost brand new and was left there for some minor install works like steel pedal set! The car started and sounded very different (quiet and erratic) and even performed pretty bad after that, I would say for 2-3 days but when I was about to get really worried it just changed to normal. I don't think there is anything different with the "Canadian" 1Ms, there might be something installed and then de-installed by the previous owner or some dealer like in my case could mess with the software of the car. I also advice you to find another bone stock 1M in your area and listen to it side to side just to make 100% sure because sometimes waiting that long for finding another 1M and missing your old car could have altered your memories as well EDIT: Mine was also August 2011 build.
