$1,200 to install ACS springs?

I'm having a heck of a time finding someone who can install ACS springs on my F34 (335i xDrive with dynamic suspension). AC Schnitzer U.S. pointed me to a local shop, who decided that it was too complex ("because of the options on your particular car") and pointed me to the performance team at my local dealer.

They quoted $1,200 for the installation, which is way more than I was expecting.

Is there any way that this is reasonable?

The most expensive I was quoted was about $500. I found a few shops for around 300-400 as well so 1200 is pretty crazy

Dinan goes by the BMW service manual 'book hours' and they say 8-9 hours. Assume 8 hours @ $150/hr, and that's around $1200.

Anyways, to answer your question - No, it likely takes closer to 3-4 hours.

Yikes.
Spring install should be doable by any reputable shop for 1/3 that price. I got my done including laser alignment for $380 Cad (a couple shops were a bit cheaper too) . $380 Cad at current exchange rates is...well...dirt cheap. Even at par of $380usd, it would still be a good deal.

For the record, not sure how different an f30 xdrive w/dynamic handling could be much different from an f34. I'm assuming it should be pretty similar.

UPDATE: The springs are due to be delivered tomorrow, and I'm scheduled in at the dealer the Monday after next. I was never able to find anyone else in DFW who would take on the job.

Yup (including the alignment). No other option in the DFW area.

Did you ask on e90 post for suggestion? That's a lot of money to pay for springs.

There HAS to be some other options other than the dealer recommendation at $1200. That just seems ludicrous, and 3x more than it should really cost.

Unfortunately I'm in Canada and have no idea what shops are in DFW but I'd hate to see a fellow member get ripped off that badly.

I'd cancel that appointment and keep looking. There must be a shop that can do it for something reasonable.

The springs should take about an hour... Our price is $250 for installation for walk in springs and $150 if bought from us.

Thats like paying 4x the cost of the springs for the install? are you gonna pay that much when you need to return to stock? You might as well pay to get coil overs installed since they charge the same price pretty much.

Price he quoted $350 front and $250 rear

Check with Ultimate Bimmer Service in carrollton. 972-418-1800. Ask for Brent and tell him Hugo recommended you. My car is there at the moment.

I really hope you find someone else because at $1200, I'd be worried about two things.

One, they are crooks and straight out ripping people off.

Two, they don't know what the f#$k they are doing and are upcharging because they think it's going to be a very difficult job that should cost 4x more than normal, meaning they are incompetent.

Don't do it!!!

Oh my. It's my first time back on the forum after a week of travel and a sales kickoff, and I'm stunned by the number of people who have taken it upon themselves to find me a better option.

Thank you all! It's people like you who make this forum so awesome!

(And frankly AC Schnitzer U.S. could take a lesson here ...)

As you can probably guess by the date on which I'm posting this, I did go ahead an have the "performance team" at Classic BMW do the installation. I had committed to doing so, and I don't like to think of myself as someone who backs out of a commitment just to save a few hundred dollars. (I've found that working in sales has definitely affected my buying behavior.)

For some reason, it took them 3 days to get everything done, so it was a darn good thing that I had the loaner. I picked the car up mid-day today, and I am very happy with the result. I was worried that a 25mm drop would be too aggressive, but that's definitely not the case on an F34; it simply gets rid of the quasi-crossover look that someone at BMW seems to think people want. (It also really makes the 18" wheels look right, IMO.)

I haven't noticed a significant difference in the ride, which is all to the good. I've actually been very happy with the suspension since I got Dinan Shockware installed, and I definitely didn't want anything substantially stiffer. With the ACS springs, speedbumps and our local disintegrating road are about the same, and cornering is as good or better.

All in all I'm extremely please with the result, even if I did ultimately pay a bit more than needed for installation.

I don't currently have any plans to do so, but I'll probably keep the car for at least 8 more years, so who knows.
