engine overheat error but temp under 250?

Hey guys quick question, just today a buddy of mine got an engine overheat warning drive moderatly to bring engine temp down but temperature never got over 250 degrees. Could it have been a false alarm? Or something potentially going bad?

Overheat could be coolant. Oil temp is displayed by gage.

Could be the water pump, how many miles and year on your buddys? Check for shadow codes.

66k miles and thats true. I checked codes and nothing in relevance to coolant? Very weird. Maybe water pump?

If you only have the drive moderately light and it is the water pump drive it lightly to the shop and have it checked out. If you wait at all the pump WILL fail and murphy's law says it will fail when you are on the way to work 30 miles from your shop. Ask me how I know.

Better yet run the bleed procedure and see how the pump reacts.

The temp gauge is oil on this particular platform.

There is no gauge for coolant which is why it throws the engine over heat warning.

First step is to check coolant level, this car is known to drink coolant.

If the coolant is the appropriate level, he may have a failing/failed water pump, which is a common failure point.

Water pump.
Don't play. Playing and not getting it fixed ASAP means new engine if you drive.
