Thanks for posting that. It's the first time I've seen a video of the X1 on a really twisty road, looks like it performed great.

Thanks for the video. A refreshing review from the normal magazine takes. The more I read and watch the X1, the more I think it suites my lifestyle perfectly.

Thanks for the video review - adds a little bit more to my first impressions of the F48 X1. Just in the last week we've had the new X1 released here in Australia and over the last week there's been a series of local reviews including a couple of video reviews. On paper this F48 X1 looks very attractive as we look to downsize from our F25 X3 after 4 very good years.

The question I have for use is noise - specifically suspension noise and general road/tyre/wind noise. Without exception every single one of our local reviews while generally praising the X1, adversely commented on the noise from the suspension. While ride comfort was OK for a small vehicle, it was a case of hearing rather than feeling the bumps in the road. In your video review I thought there was a couple of occasions when I could here what I thought was noise from the suspension. So - keeping in mind you are a BMW salesperson - what was your take on the suspension noise (if any)?

Hopefully we'll be having a test drive for ourselves in the next week or two. Thanks,

Tony

the noise is due to the shitty RFTs. They are awful and should have never been invented.

That said the rear seat room is a bit of concern because I'm not sure we can fit two baby seats back there.

No way with rear facing seats, at least if either of you are over 5'9" or so. I was surprised how tight the rear seats were. I put our kid in the middle and it was tighter than our E84 and lots less room than the F30 we ended up with, contrary to what press material has said.

I'm 6'2" and had to sit an inch or so further forward then ideal to keep from pushing the seat out of place when mounted in the middle.

I had a test drive yesterday, and I have a completely contrary view: I'm almost 6' and, with the driver's seat in a comfortable position, I could easily and comfortably fit in the rear seat behind the driver. This was with the (adjustable) rear seat in its rearmost position, and there was still "adequate" space in the rear for me if I slid it forward to a middle position (ok, not for a long trip, though). A rear-facing baby seat should fit easily in both outboard positions, and the width would easily accommodate two children's seats in the outboard positions. But, if anyone is concerned, check with the dealer.

Being able to sit behind yourself is sadly not enough of an indicator for most rear facing kid seats. We had our Chicco Keyfit 30, which is smaller than our Chicco NextFit, which I'm almost certain would not have fit. I could sit behind myself in our 135i, but a rear facing seat wouldn't have fit on either side.

Important caveat, the one we drove did not have the adjustable rear seat. Isn't it 4" of adjustment? That would be huge if it's a full 4" further back from the non adjustable seats.

I'm not sure where the non-adjustable rear seat sits - I would have thought at the rearmost position, but perhaps not. But the car I test-drove did have the adjustable seat, and there was certainly sufficient space for the "Mother's Choice" seat we have.

If I can't get two rear facing seats in there the X1 might be a non starter. Our son is 28 months so we should be turning him around soon and we have another one on the way. We did order our X1 with the reclining rear seat so if that doesn't work then we'll have no choice but to get the X3

I'd suggest you do a test fitting at the dealer before you take delivery. From the car I drove, I find it almost inconceivable your seat(s) wouldn't fit...and it would represent a major mistake by BMW....but these things do happen.

Two baby seats do not fit side by side in the new X1 so we'd lose the entire back row and no one else could sit back there. Cancelling the order tomorrow and going with the X3.

The front seats are narrow as fuck too and my ass is tiny.

Hi, what do you mean 2 child seats don't fit, not enough width at the anchor points? We don't have any kids right now (so not familiar with child seats) but part of getting the X1 would be to accomodate kids in the next few years. So just wondering what the potential issues are with child seats.

I think what he's saying is that he can't fit two child seats + a third person in the back row. Haven't tried it in an X1 yet, but my wife's Tiguan has the same issue -- two child seats leaves enough room for half an adult in the back seat.

Most likely 2 child seats will fit just fine by themselves.

BMW X1 has ISOFIX (at least in EU) on backseats so two child seats fit for sure.
The ISOFIX width is standard so both the car anchors and the child seats connectors have to match perfectly, and I'm sure they do (otherwise the car would not have the ISOFIX anchors to start with).
Regarding the third person in the back that is a totally different issue.

My observation is, and my dealer confirms two child seats fit in the back, but both must be on outboard positions, i.e., you can't use the centre. As with most cars, it's unlikely anyone would fit between the two, except a thin and frail grandparent! This is more a function of the size of modern child seats.

Exactly this.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in the US it is recommended that infants be rear facing in the center and not on the sides.

I'm not in the US, so can't comment. In Australia it is quite acceptable to have rearward facing seat in one of the outboard positions, preferably on the passenger side.

IIRC it's recommended that way in the USA due to having the extra space for side impact protection. The X1 could have stood to be a few inches wider and it wouldn't have been a problem. Sad because I like the updated model.

That, and we have 4-ton (!) Hummer H1 SUVs (and other SUV behemoths) stalking our streets driven by inattentive drivers who spend most of their driving time yelling into their cell phones.

Center position for kids is definitely best.

^^^ Speaking of Hummer H1's, I think the Honda lost that argument.

Familiar with that, this is our E84. Thankfully the kid wasn't in the car and my wife just had a single bruise and some airbag burns. Worth noting that the center position didn't work with LATCH/ISOFIX, so you had to use the seatbelt. The F48 appears to be the same. Of course kids over 40 pounds requires the seatbelt anyway.
