Cant figure out this overheating problem
2011 335i N55
I have 66k on it now. Lately its been acting up and its almost winter here in NY and I need my heat lol Ok so one day the engine running hot light came on, I pulled over and cooled down. Then continued to work, no warnings. I checked my coolant tank it was low so I added some mix. When I turn the heat on the fans come on FULL blast. and the car just doesnt act right When I have the heat off, it runs much better...still maybe the gas pedal seems laggy but better than when the heat is on. Today I tried to bleed the system maybe an air pocked from when I filled up the tank. I did the procedure to start the water pump to purge air. The fans were so loud I couldn't tell if the water pump was cycling. After about 15 mins I started the car and took it for a drive, Same thing happens when I put the heat on. I have narrowed it down to a sticky thermostat, water pump failure or maybe a coolant temp sensor issue. No codes either. Any input here would be great, Thanks!

Change the water pump and thermostat. Now. Don't even drive it any more unless you're going to the shop to have it changed.

Its been like this for a good 2 weeks now without an overheating message..which makes me think it's not the water pump

So far you're lucky that it's showing signs of failure. I would replace it now or look forward to paying for a tow in your near future. If you let it go thinking it's something else, you will not like the outcome. Take it from a guy who cooked an n52 years ago thinking I had a faulty sensor. It was a hefty $5K bill to fix it.

So I just changed the water pump. Tried to change the thermostat but for some reason my OEM one didn't match the new one. That nipple on the back came out straight instead of an elbow. Weird!
Anyway the car runs better no fans, no engine lights, etc. but this problem is still happening, When I turn the heat on the OIL TEMP goes down. What could that be? thermostat? Since it wasn't changed?? I really don't understand that

My car was doing the same thing. Pull over and then it was fine. The only time it started to overheat was on long drives "over 1.5hrs" . Took it to the dealer and it was the water pump. Since they changed it I have not had the issue anymore.
