Hiding car brands on adverts

Why do some do it and others don't?

There's a McDonalds (I think) advert on now with some VW and they've hidden all of the badges, other advertisements have done this but many haven't.

Why and why not?

Any ideas?

Not sure on this by any means but I assume..

Whoever the advert is for informs the car manufacturer that they're wanting to use one of their cars in an advert, the car manufacturer then decides if the advert will be one that gives a good impression of the car (e.g. expensive aftershave making you irresistible to the opposite sex and they'd be quite happy to have their car parked in the background and associated with this), or not (e.g. claims company showing a car crash and not wanting to be associated with this). If though they're not happy all the advertising company seem to have to do is remove the badging and it's assumed no one will recognise what type of car it is - which mostly anyone interested in cars clearly can. From the fact that they can still use the cars in these cases I assume the car manufacturer has no choice if whoever the regulator is deems the debadged car to be unrecognisable.

I personally reckon this was the sole reason behind Rovers demise as their cars were always involved in advert crashes. It now seems to be Mondeos and the odd 3-series.

It's pretty understandable wanting to hide a VW badge surely?

The opposite is also true, they now use technology to include specific brands within movies, TV's programs.

Likely they gave to consult car manufacturers and some ask for crazy money.

I think the breakdown ads, green flag, AA etc are the ones all the manufacturers want to be in........

Bond films usually Aston Martin and RR vs Mercedes and Audi.

Can think of too many BMW related films or characters? Jason S in the transporter loves an A6 and S8 etc.

Yes that and...the Z8!!

To be fair the directors nearly got the self parking 7 series right, just hard to predict that Nokia would be almost dead and you'd need to use a special key to reverse park it.....driving it via phone is still a little way off.

I could be down to the advertising company have a particular car manufacturer as a customer. Rightly that customer would be a bit pissed off if they were to see free advertising for another maker.

Maybe! I thought it was the Nokia 8800 or something that flipped open along its vertical axis to reveal a keyboard.

Ah they had gadgets back then.

You mean bought by Microsoft well it's just about the same thing... (plus there is still a Nokia doing something)

It's interesting though, how giants of commerce come and go, Kodak were the Apple of their day and now look at them, only 18% of the fortune 500 companies from 1955 are still around.

Creative destruction.....

for the most part, everything you see is a paid advertisement.....for the most part.

you dont want to give away free advertising. You definitely dont want to give away free advertising when someone else is paying to have their product in your advertisement.

From a logic perspective (im sure they've spent plenty of money doing similar research): Sometimes you dont want to show any kind of brand relationship, people might take it the wrong way. Sometimes they hide brands so that it doesnt distract you from the main brand.

In most ads, there's a reason for every single thing they do, they conduct HUNDREDS of tests and focus groups for the most ridiculous things from the colors that should be displayed to the volume of peoples speech (why do you think Billy Mays screamed in every oxyclean commercial? to catch your attention! thats why some commercials are louder than the tv program you're watching).

On the flip side, ive seem some HORRIBLE uses of paid advertisement.
the movie anti-trust, the guy walks into an empty hallway that had nothing but a giant PEPSI vending machine, the camera was focused on it for a few seconds.
in fast and furious, they're CONSTANTLY drinking or mentioning Corona beer.
