Does anyone have any info in this SIB, or have had the issue resolved?

"N55 Engine: Whistling, hooting or squealing noise while running"

Tons of information here. My car is within this date, but I do not experience any of those problems. I don't think I'll be able to get BMW to replace it without the symptoms, unfortunately.

Thanks for that, very informative. I believe this is my issue, even tho my car is a 2012 i'm assuming it was produced within those dates. Car is at the dealer now, waiting to see what they say.

I had the same sound as the diy thread and just replaced the VC. Haven't had the sound in 2k miles. It's unfortunate that a cheap pvc valve makes you spend $400 on a new VC.

Yikes, they told me Belt tensioner... I waiting for them to call me back saying: "Hm, we replaced all that but the sounds is still there"

I really have a feeling it's not the tensioner...anyone know what happens if i pay for all that and it's doesn't even fix the issue i had?

Will I be SOL and have to pay for the tensioner plus the real issue?

Just got a call from the dealer, they said the noise is gone (to my surprise) by replacing the belt and tensioner.

I guess i should be happy then...

With the SIB, is the work outlined done for free even if the car is out of warranty?

Not if it's out of warranty. SIBs are just helpful tidbits of information about problems that have been reported by BMW dealerships worldwide. It's an easy way of spreading knowledge, reducing average diagnosis time and giving BMW engineers information about how to improve a component.
