Changes to my exhaust, Opinions?
So currently I have the stock set up replaced with 2 custom mufflers and the sound is beautiful but not loud enough for my taste.
The picture i attached is the stock set up, so I have only changed the mufflers. Im gonna be adding a catless DP, replacing the x pipe with straight pipe, and moving the x pipe to after where the dp goes. What are your thoughts? I dont think it should be raspy with the x pipe right after the donwpipe. Opinions?

I may have not looked at my exhaust close enough when doing so, but when I installed my catless downpipe and bmw performance exhaust I didn't see an x pipe. Are you xdrive?
I am not xdrive, but replacing the downpipe alone made my car significantly louder with the stock exhaust. Adding the bmw pe later fine tuned the sound and added a tad bit of noise. So, if I were you I would swap the downpipe alone and see if you like it. I can't say anything about moving the xpipe to another location, but the difference in loudness with the catless downpipe is huge. When I cold start my car it is ridiculously loud. Just take note that it will throw a CEL. I see you have a JB4 so there should be a good performance increase after removing the catted downpipe too with the correct map. I would assume the JB4 auto deletes the the CEL that is thrown with catless downpipe. I know very little about the JB4 as I have only ever had a cobb.

Start with catless downpipes, give it 500 miles and then decide whether you need the car even louder

+1 on the downpipe too...it'll be loud enough and you'll be dealing with drone if you go any more aggressive

It's just so much more cost efficient knocking both out together, but I'll give it a go and add in the DP

I hate rasp and you and I both have the same exact setup. I'd prefer to play it safe and just go with catless downpipes as everyone else is suggesting.
Another thing, have you done any dampening in the back to curb the rattles that obviously incurs from the increased exhaust sound? A little music and you hardly notice it, but I swear to g-d whenever I have a passenger, somewhere in the back of the rear seats just love to rattles even more so than when I'm by myself--it can get a tad tedious at times as it sounds as if something is loose. I've noticed that the little.. erm.. cubby between the rear seats (that you can open and close), the lid LOVES TO RATTLE. It drove me crazy in my N54 as I didn't know what was doing it at first, but leaving it open greatly helped. Sometimes I wish I could just take it completely out, because it appears to be intermittent with my N55--open or closed. |

I did the PE-mod first, wanted a bit louder, then got the DP too. Terrible mistake. Couldn't stand the ricey, droney, raspy noise that came out of my car. Way too Honda-Civic-like.
Ended up getting rid of the DP since the PE-mod isn't reversible. Like others have said, first try the DP alone and then decide if you really need more volume. V8 N/A motors generally sound better when louder. Very different story for turbo 6s however... no wonder most companies have to play engine noises through the speakers to try to achieve a pleasing exhaust note. |

The rattling is a son of a bitch, the seat belt is always hitting against where the car seat gets mounted too and it drives me crazy

If you hate rasp, you need the active autowerke exhaust

Talk to a professional audio installer and have them place a small microphone near the exhaust and run that into your audio system. You can use your volume knob to set how loud it is.

If youre planning on running that setup and hate rasp, you may want to check out our Tru-Xs. Its essentially a stainless X pipe, but is resonated to keep the tone deep, rather than high/raspy. We get a ton of positive feedback by owners who run them on their car.
