Question Watch Winder recommendations?

So I've pulled the trigger on a very nice pre-owned Tag Heuer Carrera from Watchfinder!

So as it's an automatic I now need a watch winder! Or do I?

Any recomendations please?

Nice! Which model did you opt for Cal 1887? Day-Date? Would also be interested to hear people's thoughts on a watch winder as I have a carrera myself and it doesn't get worn daily.

Why do you need a winder ? Decent watch movements stop when the power reserve reaches a minimum threshold so as to prevent damage to the main spring.

If you want a watch that never stops, wear it every day or so or buy a quartz

I was just thinking the same, as currently I wear the Rolex all the time, but now I have another watch I want to have a wonder for it. It's a total pain having to reset the time if I choose to go away for a weekend without it for example.

So only needed if you're not going to wear it every day.

Interested to see what advice comes back...

I thought about a watch winder as both my omega and tag's are auto's but I just tend to wear my omega all the time, then when I want to wear my tag I adjust it to the correct time.

Remember, a stopped watch will be right twice a day:-)

This is true and if my watch didn't have the date on it I would be less bothered, but my OCD means I need to get the date right too and that's a lot of winding!

No the Cal 1887's are £900 more pre owned, & I don't like the dial numbers as much as the dial markers, also they appear to have a 43mm case which I think may look too big on my fairly small wrists compared to the 41mm one that I've bought:

Nice watch, mine is similar, personally I prefer the crocodile leather strap but it's far less practical

I have one of these - https://www.barringtonwatchwinders.c...-watch-winders

Cheap enough, runs on batteries or mains, looks good and it works.

Have 2xautos.

Used to have a 4 watch winder to keep em running. Ditched it years ago, no problems ever since.

Most will disagree but my steer is unnecessary gadget addition that sucks power all day long . I've also in the last 18 months pretty much exclusively worn a Fitbit or Garmin sports watch so the autos have had a lot of drawer time.

Great choice of watch.

I do love the leather straps but I heard they get smelly and are a lot harder to clean so that put me off.

Yep my strap is starting to smell a bit now especially after wearing it in Spain in the summer a bit of aftershave on it usually works for a while.

Not sure you are going to get a winder for less than £99 though and even that one I would have my doubts about its longevity. As far as I can recall I paid circa £800 for 2 winders back in 2009 and they were far from the cheapest. Like watches you tend to get what you pay for.

After looking into it a bit more I think you're right. The cheaper ones don't have a setting for the number or turns per day, which by the looks of it is fairly important as it is possible to overwind some watches and damage them!

I might just wait a while and see if I need the winder or not.

Mine haven't got a timer on either and I just had a look and I cant even find the makers name on them. As far as I can remember the guy at Watches of Switzerland recommended them and I just went from there. They haven't let me down however but the new ones I have looked at on the net seem very flashy indeed.

I am not convinced they are a necessity however I am far from an expert.

Do you meaan yours have no timer at all? Even the £30 ones i'm looking at wind for 1 hour then rest for 3 hours, and have the option of clockwise or counterclockwise.

No mine have 2 options constant or timed and that is it They are approaching 7 years old now however.

I distinctly remember the guy saying that heavy watches needed a heavy duty Winder as the cheap ones would pack up after a while, they are not high tech and appear to be made out of ebony as they weigh an absolute ton!! They havent let me down though and at least 1 of them is on the go all of the time if not both as I usually just wear a cheap Casio Protrek.

The Barrington one I have has 3 options for direction (Clockwise, anti clockwise and Bi Direction) and about 5 different 'turn' settings and it seems to work fine - 850 turns wasn't enough for my watch and when i've upped it seems to keep it wound.

I got sick of having to wind my watch every weekend as I don't wear it in the week.

Found the sales ticket they are 'Rapport London Ebony' Winders and I paid £790 for the brace of them back in November 2009.
