Texas open carry law (guns)

You can now legally walk around Texas in most circumstances openly carrying your gun on your hip, once you've passed a test.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...-handguns.html

Can you imagine such a thing in the UK? Everyone down the pub or out on the town carrying guns!! It would be carnage....

I'm not a stranger to guns I used to shoot most weekends (clays) and before they were banned I used to go to a shooting range but it seems madness to me.

They are a funny old lot the Americans, I have spent quite a considerable amount of time out there and actually owned a place in North Carolina up to a few years ago.

It never ceased to amaze me that a race of people capable of putting a man on the moon are inherently daft as brushes.

The 'Right to bare arms' mob will never be persuaded that it is absolute lunacy for the general public to carry hand guns and no amount of mass shootings out there will convince them

Oh well, it is there country I suppose.

Agreed, we had the police wearing firearms around our local shopping centre, Meadowhall in Sheffield over Christmas and it really shook me. Yet I'm often in the states were I'm completely used to it, even to the point of visiting the local range with friends.

I've only ever been to NY, LA and LV so I've never seen people walking around with guns on their hips (apart from the police).

I remember going to NY on a stag do 27 of us we had some proper nutters with us, the best mans final words before we got off the plane were, "remember lads no fucking around the police have guns and only ask once!"

I thought LV allowed open carry.

I might have been blind drunk for 4 days...but I didn't see/notice anyone openly carrying, looking at the Nevada laws you can open carry however the casinos and hotels on the strip don't allow open carrying of weapons (from what I've read) hence I wouldn't have seen them.

BTW I loved Vegas.

There is a big thread on gun carrying / ownership on the main off topic thing.

My view is that the big fat genie was let out the bottles a few hundred years ago and there is no chance of putting the bloater back in.

Some States have reasonable legislation.

Tighter controls and training are only way to cope.

They could never realistically be banned, a silly number are in circulation.

I have no problem with people being allowed to openly carry, as long as passed training and authorised.

However, I am totally against having handguns readily available over here.

They are too easy to get hold of as it is, never mind legalising them again.

We nearly had even tighter controls recently, however things never went to far.

I suspect it is banned on the strip, but as far as I can recall Nevada allows it.

On that note, in a back street bar in NY with a colleague, mid afternoon couple of pints. Long straight bar with us at one end and an old guy the other end, that's it. In walk three Brits, half cut, loud mouth, swearing etc, I go to the loo, feeling embaresesed about my fellow country men.

Come back from the loo to see the old guy with a revolver to the head of one of the Brits head, I go completely tunnel vision and see nothing else and think WTF!

As I zone back in again, things take shape, his mates are laughing, one guy has a camera out, the old guy is smiling, and my mate, who's a former rock ape and would have got the F out of their pronto is just scowling at them.

Turns out, this old yank is an off duty cop out for a couple of drinks on his lunch and these are three Brits on a stag do who he's offered to create a disturbingly dodgy picture for.

After we'd drunk more heavily, it wasn't the fact that this lad had had a gun to his head, it was the fact that this obviously experienced copper would do this and think no more of it than one of our bobbies showing off his pepper spray.

As they say, same language, different people.

Saw this on the New Posts... Hi friends, just wanted to point out how funny it is reading the rhetoric on the other side of the pond on gun "control" and how different the mindset is. Whenever I meet someone anti-guns in America, I tell them to join you guys in the UK if they don't like it I respect your views and am happy you feel safer without legal guns on the street, I just wish the people in America respected that privilege. If they don't like it, I hear Europe is awesome!

I'll keep my guns I feel much safer sleeping at night knowing if a some lad wants to break into my house he will be met with a 12 gauge shotgun.

I think its also different over there, smaller country, and you guys have a camera on every block.

Do you guys have camera's installed in the bathroom stalls at public restrooms yet?

Yes I'd feel a lot safer in a country where thousands of people are killed annually by guns....

I didn't post it to have a go at the USA or its people, I referred to it being crazy to do that in the UK. (if you'd visited the UK you'd understand why!)

Enjoy your RTBA and beautiful country....

Yes bloody cameras everywhere!

With these 2013 stats, the first thing i'd buy if I lived in the states would be a gun:

84,258 nonfatal injuries
11,208 deaths by homicide
21,175 by suicide with a firearm
505 deaths due to accidental discharge of a firearm
281 deaths due to firearms-use with "undetermined intent"

Although i'd prob bump it up to 506...

Isn't it hard to compare the UK to the US due to population and land mass size? I mean it's obviously going to have higher stats on all the scary bad things isn't it?

And this is the reason things will never change over there, so many Americans have the same blinkered views as you.

The NRA and other nutcases like Donald Trump bang on about the risk from Terrorists, but if you look at the facts, the threat from Terrorists is virtually nothing at all compared to the threat from Americans killing other Americans with guns!

Here's the proof, it is shocking that stats like this are completely ignored by the vast majority of Americans:

Christ on a bike, that's like a small UK town disappearing. Don't get me wrong, the states is a beautiful country and I've met/worked with some wonderful people, but those are scary numbers.

We're out their for the summer holidays, doing the whole Griswalds thing, Yosemite, time on a dude ranch and rafting down the Grand Canyon. Best I keep those figures away from the other half.
