Anyone know how to get to the back side of the stereo
Well guys I am new to the family. I bought a 328i and a X1 for my wife at the end of the year. I bought both the X1 and 328i very nicely loaded. They have garage door openers, my wife's X1 has the automated rear door, indoor lighting, and X-Drive. We are missing 2 main items that we wanted. We wanted the reverse camera and phone mirroring. I ordered 2 Bimmertech kits for the rear camera and phone mirroring device. I got the unit fully operational on my 328i. I will make a guide and post it on the 328i forums soon.
I am now trying to install the unit on my wife's X1. She insisted to test on my 328i first. Everything went well on my 328i and started to work on her X1. I have installed the actual rear camera and ran the wiring to the front of the SUV. I am now trying to figure out how to remove the front radio panel. I have yet to find a way to get to the module that controls the radio equipment. On the 328i you start by removing the front AC vents(pops out) but on the X1 they are not popping out. I dont want to force it as I am not sure if that's the correct way. Does anyone have any information on getting to the back of the stereo? I have also emailed BimmerTech to see if they have any information. I am taking lots of pictures to make a guide in-case anyone else wants to do this for the X1 also. Thanks for any guidance on this. |

dsngjoe, I shall be interested to learn how you get on, too. My X1 has the professional nav and includes the rear view camera, but I'm very interested in learning how well iPhone mirroring works, as I find iPhone Nav systems such as Waze much more up to the moment with traffic conditions. Please keep us posted.

I got it installed guys and took pictures of the process. It's not hard but it's not as easy as it was on my 328i. I will make a guide soon but working in Iowa now. The screen mirroring is very cool BUT there is one catch. The audio does not go through the Bimmer-Tech device. I had to run a cable to the AUX in in the arm rest console. When the screen mirroring is enabled, you setup the AUX in audio to listen to it. The Video quality is great and I will post a video of it in action once I get back home.

Thanks, and I'll look forward to your guide in due course.
I'm curious as to why the Bimmertech device just doesn't allow audio through Bluetooth, as would be the case if you were just running the phone in a holder?

Thank you for the further explanation. So, does that mean you can't answer/ call using the iPhone via the BMW Bluetooth when it is connected to the Bimmertech device? That would be a deal-breaker for me.
