Upgrading stock projector HIDs

I just got a '16 X5 and the headlights are so much brighter than my '09 e90 M3's headlights. Has anyone changed the stock bulb to a better one with more lumens?

I would go with the OSRAM Night Breaker instead, they are a +70% bulb, the CBI are only +20%.

These are rated at 3200 lumen, which is the same as the stock bulbs. Just wondering but how can they be brighter when they produce the same amount of light.

Where did you find the lumen rating of the bulb? I could not find any actual specs from OSRAM.

http://www.osram.com/osram_com/produ...ited/index.jsp There is a link there for the Family Data sheet that has the specs on it. As well there are spec sheets for each bulb type

I've been using my CBIs since 2013 and love them. They're still significantly bright and definitely are much brighter than the stock bulbs. I was at the lights next to another E90 and my lights were much whiter and brighter than his.

Not sure how else to improve output other than maybe replacing projectors with clear ones?

OK, interesting. They also show the CBI listed above as 3200 lumen.

i've always seen HID bulbs listed at 3200 lumen. Of course thats just what it says on paper, i have never tried them personally to see what difference there is

Do the bulbs just lose lumens after time? I've had the same stock bulbs for 6 yrs.

There's a few threads about upgrading the lenses. That supposedly make a huge difference.

Yes, the bulbs will become less bright (and shift towards bluer/whiter) as they age.

The Osram Night Breaker lists that it has a 55w option available. That's the first time I've seen 55w D1S. I'm assuming these would throw an error of OEM is 35w, any thoughts?

I was debating 55w hid in the fog with upgraded D1S. Lol, 55w fogs and 55w low beams may be overkill. We have 55w 5000k on our ml320 projectors and they're great.

Your 09 M3 probably has 7 year old lamps, depending how much you drive at night they could be well faded. Any decent new ones should be brighter.

The wattage is determined by the ballasts. OEM ballasts are not 55w.

I wonder if an aftermarket ballast/bulb and error cancellers would work?

I just replaced my xenon bulbs as one packed up with Philips d1s xtreme vision. Noticeable difference in brightness, colour I would describe as ice white compared to stock. Philips claims it is +50% brighter then stock.

Be vigilant if you are interested as a lot of fakes out there.

As stated before, the biggest improvement would be replacing the lenses with clear ones. Stock lenses suck and the cutoff is terrible.

Do you get an error codes when running the D1S: Osram 66144 CBI bulbs? Those look crazy good. I looking to upgrade my bulbs and angel eyes this spring.
