Steering Wheel "Shimmy"/"Kick"

Has anyone experienced a "shimmy" or "kick" in the steering wheel while making small adjustments, or even holding the wheel steady, during highway driving?

Intermittently, a small "kick" can be felt in the steering wheel when making small adjustments near center. It almost feels like someone rapidly flipped the power to the steering on then off which results in a tiny bit of unintended motion in the wheel.

Thoughts?

Issue with the steering? Is this the "artificial" play off center that the car mags whine about?

When was the last time you've had those wheels balanced?

Sure it's not the lane departure warning?

Do you have the Driver Assistance Plus Package?

If so, does this sensation occur on the highway as you are drifting out of a lane?

Why I ordered my current one without it. Never used it.

rolltidef32 About 10-12 months ago when I took the car in to have 2 wheels replaced, IIRC.

Not DAP or Lane Assist as my car does not have any of those options.

This is an intermittent issue. It rarely occurs, but the steering is usually so quiet that I do notice it when it happens.

May need the wheels balanced.

I have it done every 4-5 months; helps with tire wear and brake feel also.

Any jiggles with an electric steering rack can indicate something funny going on under the car.

Something came to mind while reading the M2 first review on automobile mag. They mentioned that the M2's EPS shuts off at center to increase MPG (~0.5%), so I'm wondering if our EPS is programmed the same way? Maybe that is what I am feeling?

"In the straight-ahead position, the assist turns off to save energy (good for 0.6 mpg, BMW claims) and we thought, paying close attention, we could detect the difference just as it re-engaged for a turn. "
