Am I making the wrong choice?

Hi all,

I have always enjoyed manual transmission cars and have ordered my 340i with a MT. However, it seems most on this forum like AT. Am I going to negatively impact the resale value of my car by choosing a MT? Should try and see if I can swap to an AT?

Thanks in advance

i dont think it would impact the value too much but it might impact the appeal of the car when you do come to sell it.

i am a MT fan in things like track cars and such but why anyone would want MT these days as a daily driver is beyond me. auto tiptronic is so far ahead of MT its not even funny

It is a personal choice, but a choice I like. MT seems to be popular in the States though. Also, if you're worried about the resale value, think of it that you may not be able to sell your car to everyone, but to a person who is specifically after a 3 series with a 6 cyl engine mated to a 6 speed manual - a car enthusiast, so you may still be able to get the money you want.

The 8 AT in the F30 is so good I would go for this every time over the manual.

Wouldn't worry too much about resale though if a manual is what you want, get it!!

I had a 2015 335 shipped from CA to FL because it was the only manual I could find with the options I wanted

Best advice is to buy what you want, not what the next owner might want.

How are you buying it? If it's on a PCP then you'll get an idea of the expected final value which should have some reassurance.
If you haven't tried the 8AT then I'd suggest you try it first as it really is a peach of a gearbox. But if you enjoy the feeling of changing gear yourself then stick with your stick.

If you are worried about resale value, then maybe the f30 is not the car for you!!

Most buying a 340i will opt for the 8AT, this in turn will make your car a pretty rare beast. Go for it, you should never be swayed by others thoughts

It is PCP. I did test drive the 340i with AT and it did seem very good. I guess I am also finding myself in too minds. The monthlies will probably increase by aŁ33, no big deal in itself, but I am not sure what it would do to the delivery date assuming I can make the change - the build status is currently 1100.

Hi
I don't know whether it will have any impact on the resale value but I have been driving for 43 years and always drove a manual I said on many occasions I would never buy a car that was auto?
wow then I test drove the auto on my 1st car from bmw a 328i msport 2012 it was just a lovely car, never missed a beat
then come October 2015 I bought the lci 330i msport auto it is brilliant.
I also test drove the 340i which is also a superb car but Ł6k more than the 330i I didn't think it was worth the extra money.
So before anyone starts shouting the 330i is a 6 pot all I can san say is BOLLOCKS.

I never wanted an automatic, ever. Fortunately, that is the only option in a 335d so my hand was forced and boy am I glad it was! That being said, I'm sure there will always be a buyer for the the manual variety paired with a 6 cylinder petrol - I get the feeling these will be somewhat of a rarity in years to come.

I think a manual with a petrol is a nice thing, but with a diesel I really struggle to see the point. At least with a petrol you have this nice wide power band and there is the pleasure of timing the change as the revs run to the redline.

With a diesel engine you have to change every 2 seconds in the first 3 gears, and constantly shuffling up and down to ensure you're in the right part of the narrow power band.

I love my MT, that being said when I had a loaner that was 8AT it did make me waiver for a few minutes thinking I made the wrong choice. Then my wife stole the loaner as she can't drive MT and loved it, told me I'm lucky mine is MT or I would be driving the SUV. this reminded me why I have a MT

MT popular in the States? You ever tried renting a manual car in the States? Impossible!!

Keep the manual. Its something I yearned for but an option the Mrs wanted a say in as she's used to driving autos now (after 2 years in a F20). I still wish I had MT but I'm just using the paddles more for some driver involvement. 8SAT is excellent during traffic jams and slow movig traffic though! (If you decide to change, make sure its the Sports Auto you choose, not just Auto).

Think it depends on your driving style. For the 330d the AT is perfect because of the narrow power band but personally with a big six petrol I would go manual every time I found the AT very very frustrating in a drive of the 135 and 235 because you can't wring out the gears in the same way as a manual. Others would disagree but if I do order an M2 it will only be manual.

Isn't the 6MT in the F3x a bit rubbish though?
I had a 420i manual as a loaner and found it very disappointing in terms of action; very long throw in particular iirc

You can change your mind at 1100 and 1200 I believe with little or no effect after that it would be a delay so you need to decide soon.

I changed from manual to auto when I bought an f30' 330d .. I love the zf auto and have had it on each car since including my incoming 340i f30.

It's totally a choice thing .. Do what you want and forget about re sell for now

Thank you all for your input. I think I will stick with manual. Just driving home in my current F30 328i earlier this evening I realised how much I love manual even though for pure convenience you can't beat an automatic. The car is going to be weekend drive anyways.
