Transmission.

Hi all.

Can I re use the transmission pan and filter for the ZF transmission when changing the fluid? I know the filter is built into it or is that not advised?

I've heard of people just cleaning and changing the filter on their gm trains. Thanks

Some recommend changing TS fluid at 50k or, then the filter and fluid at 100k and so on. I wouldn't keep the 1 filter/pan replacement past 100k (or so of course few K miles won't make a difference, or rather to say shouldn't ).
If there is a reason you don't want to change - its of course better to do at least fluid change.
I know for sure that id rather not change my oil extra 5-10k than TS fluid (just IMHO and example, since no reason to choose).

Btw seems that pelican parts carries your TS oil pan kit (non bmw) for like $140.
I don't think that you can just replace filter part and leave old assembly.

What is the mileage? That matters. BMW's policy was never change the trans fluid not it is 100K miles. Actually there is little reason to change it out if you have less than that mileage. Having done both because my trans pan cracked and is common with this POS ABS plastic the old filter at 65000 miles was like new inside. I didn't bother cleaning the magnets since I replaced it due to a hairline crack. Should go to an easy 100K miles. I know I will not change mine until it gets well into the 130000 mile area based on what I have seen so far.
Use this guy for your fluid and pan.
http://www.thectsc.com/
Used him for years on other ZF trans and OEM fluid and parts...

I'm at 163k, bought the vehicle at 125k and not sure if it was "ever" changed at 125k or before. Since Bmw lifetime is 100k there is a good chance it may have never been changed.. Could have been I don't know though..

So I'm just worried about it. My Indy a month back when I was in for some service he said my transmission pan was leaking a little, not to worry now but will need addressed soon. I forgot to ask what the fluid level was cause if he checked it or even if he didn't and just saw it was leaking, I'm not sure how long it's been leaking so fluid could be low and I could be possible burning up my x mission.

Kits for the ZF transmission are how much does anyone know? I know the fluid is expensive somewhere between $20-30 liter.

Any input would be great. Thanks

The transmission manufacturer ZF disagrees with that "BMW 100k lifetime oil" change interval. They recommend changing the oil starting at 50,000 miles and 75,000 miles. Here's a YouTube video of ZF.

I personally recommend flushing the fluid and changing the filter/pan every 50,000 miles.

50 to 75,000 miles. Or 8 years. Scary. Idk if it's been ever done. Should I do it?

This is a dumb question, but does a manual transmission have the filter built into the pan as well?

Or, can I replace my filter and re-use my pan?

I am having my fluid changed in a month and now I am curious... I have 93k on my 6MT.

If you plan on keeping the car for awhile, yes. You have to justify the cost for a car that isn't worth that much (because of its miles).

Exactly I've pretty much fixed everything on this car, I would definitely be loosing out selling it as I'm sure I'd only be able to get 6-7k but I'm probably going to keep it forever until the motor blows up or something so I am planning on doing this x mission service

I would do it more frequently if you have a manual transmission. You'll basically just be doing a flush and refill. Pretty simple. I would recommend doing it every 30,000 miles. As you can see from that video I posted, it's a bitch of a procedure for an automatic.

Manual trannys have a drain and fill plug and that's it. There is a magnet on the drain plug that you need to clean off when you drain the fluid. This magnetic plug is effectively your filter.

And this is for the ZF not the gm? Seems cheap but that's good!

I figured that other pan was really cheap. Was prolly for the gm transmission. I need the ZF transmission pan and filter for my 330

I only use realoem to see diagrams and find part numbers, then buy elsewhere.
