Around 8% HP gain on protune vs "notune" is that normal?

Hello everyone,

I have just gotten the right revision for my protune map and went out to the dyno.

Car bone stock: 308 HP and 435 Nm
Car with chargepipe, cobb dp's, AMS intercooler - no tune: 318 HP and 450 Nm
Car with protune on 93 octane pump: 342 HP and 557 Nm

Is that kind of a gain normal for N55, and what you would normally expect?
The torque seems fine but I personally find the power to be lacking.

All values are at the crank.

Could anyone please shed any light onto this matter?

I would expect 342hp at the WHEELS not crank. Do you have the dyno graph

Why do people say, torque is what I expected, but not power?

Torque makes power. Torque made at any given RPM is DIRECTLY proportional to power.

Graphs look good. Strong midrange, and the small turbo running out of steam up top.

I do understand the correlation betwen torque and power, however I can't understand why people get roughly the same TQ but much higher horsepower with similiar setups, and the difference is quite sizable.

N55 turbo flows like crap in the top. Those look like awesome numbers to me to be honest.

I was rather aiming onto 400ish HP at the crank, just as the other guys here were getting.

My thought process on this. Your stock of 308hp is around 280whp. Your protune of 342hp is probably 310-315whp. That is less than a JB4 map 2. Do you know if your gas is really bad or if you told them to be extremely conservative? I target 16psi when I run 93, which is closer to 340whp.

My gas is not the best, there are better fuels available, however it's a solid 93 octane (98 RON) fuel.

I'm just astounded, my local tuners easiely squeze out around 360-380 HP at the crank on bone stock N55's and the protune barely makes 342? (On the same fuel I'm using, or very similiar one - where I'm located all fuels are basically the same)

I'm still talking with the tuner for my protune but I somehow doubt that they will achieve what I want and I think I will need to go and get a local tuner involved.

Do you have any logs of the current tune? What boost you are targeting.

I do have several logs, how do I attach them here?

I'm not sure what kind of boost the tuner is targeting, highest I've seen is 22 Psi.

First two are runs on M3 from roughly 2500 rpm to redline, and the third one is from general cruising to illustrate the overal jerkiness, "hiccups" and other issues with the tune e.g. transmission overheat.

Get a catless dp, add meth and get a re-tune. You should be in the ball park that you're looking for.

How are you getting crank HP values? Was the engine removed and put on a water brake dyno?

Also, how much timing is being commanded?

Timing, AFR and boost = engine power.....

Timing differences can put you at 290hp or 390hp...... Just make sure you have enough knock resistance.

I already have catted cobb dp, I am not thinking of change, imo the power output of 400 HP on the crank is more than doable on these mods.

Just measuring power at wheels then accounting for losses.

For Timings, AFR I have uploaded the datalogs in previous post

Looking at your first 2 logs the power makes sense. You peak at 18 psi with negative timing and taper down to 9psi with 6 degrees timing. Also, the afr in the first log is very weird. It is too rich in the beginning half then ok in the second half. Peaking at 18psi is probably too high for 93 and 9psi is very conservative. So that explains the nice torque but poor HP. I can't really read the 3rd log on my phone, but the jerking may be from poor afr targets at partial throttle based on the first log. Overall I would say that is a pretty bad tune.

Thank you for your input, I am waiting for ProTuning Freaks to send me next revision of this map, but I think I will also use the services of one of local tuners out here for a comparison.

I have received a refund from ProTuning Freaks due to their tuner being on sick leave.

I am going to go with a local tuner, will update you with results once done

That is good to hear. To be honest you probably would be fine with just a JB4. A protune may get you 10-15 more hp, maybe.
