Cool!

I bet it's easier to build, better built, and more reliable than a real one

Great news indeed, some of the Lego Ideas projects have been a little predictable so nice to see this go the distance.

Yeah I got back into lego when I started buying it for my kids and then noticed the fancy big sets. Have the VW Camper, Mini Cooper and Ferrari F40, and looking forward to getting this one too.

Also have Tower Bridge which is pretty epic

Oh yes. A vast collection of Lego Technic and I never thought I would own up to that!

Buy the right model and you can have hours of fun and make a few quid if you want to then sell it as well.

Exactly what I do. It was Technic sets that got me out of the dark ages. This year is going to be expensive due to some great summer sets. The Porsche 991 is a must

Hmm I think this'll be controversial.

As a child I made R/C model planes & boats etc and plenty of Airfix too. I also built balsa planes covered in tissue and dope. So I'm clearly a child of the 60s when Lego was bricks. Some wheels maybe. And er, that's it.

You used your imagination to create things from your head. Ever since the 80s Lego have produced bespoke shaped pieces that came with instructions to create one item. And for me that's when it lost its purpose.

But those Caterhams look great and they are a perfectly valid thing to buy (and I will) but I do think today's kids lose out on the creative side of playing a bit.

Just sayin

Not at all and completely agree. My son has god knows how many sets. They get built and played with and then forgotten. That is until they get broken up and mixed up. That's when the real fun starts. From my point of view, the latest Technic sets are amazing, the detail and workings of sets like the Merc Acros and Unimog U400 are very impressive.

We you could say my wife is into it. She likes the huge creator series of buildings and shops.

They are crazy money, one was released in 2008 for £250 and now the minimum you could get one for is £2500.
If you have the money and space, buy the biggest models you can, seal them in a plastic bag and store somewhere safe for a few years, will make you money easily.

Cafe Corner possibly?, a set I sadly don't have. Most 10xxx sets double their value soon after 'end of line' Giving a much better return than any other form of investment. If you have the money to sit on a few and wait a few years you'll do well.

Maybe so but she'll make a few quid over the years when she decides to sell, look at it as funding the depreciation

Thanks Lorccy!
Just got back from LEGO HQ in Denmark after 2 days of meetings

Cant say too much at this point in time, but what I will say is their version looks AMAZING and I think possibly better than any of mine!!! I really wasn't expecting that, but there are reasons for it that I cant go into.

In my job position as a Senior LEGO Model designer for their video games, this is something I hear frequently.
However, whilst you, I and many others always remember LEGO back in the 70's being just basic bricks, I could point you to just as many unique bespoke elements back then as there are now. Infact the reason a lot of them do not exist now is because they were too unique in form / shape, or the molds got to the end of their lifespan.
They have always tried to rotate a selection of around 3000 unique shapes, that however usually creeps upwards of 6-10'000....then sometimes it gets culled back slightly.
When a new element is put into that rotation, one has to leave, its how they have always worked so nothings changed in that respect over the last 30-40 years.

They have also always made sets with instructions, the sets you refer to are the basic building sets, that are just a batch of random elements with picture ideas on the box / tub to encourage creativity, they still make these now, its just people tend to pass them by as they look at the IP sets instead.

LEGO is the most creative medium on the face of the planet, people still use their imagination and creativity to produce some amazing models, most of us buy the sets with instructions purely as parts packs to use for the things we really want to build.

Other half is a STEM teacher, mind storms, V2 is her thing. She made the rubiks cube solver, that was epic. Got funding and set up and runs the mind storm club at school now.
