Yet another M2 vs M4 debate!
Hello all...
I'm one of the lucky few who might even see his M2 this year.....but here we go. My car is a demo car from BMW, fully loaded at around £49k in the UK and I should be able to collect it in early July. I've just seen this car locally for £43k... http://www.tustainmotors.co.uk/used-...ies/m4/wd64pgk I've raced motorbikes for years and owned Lotus a Lotus Elise and 911 Carrera in the past. I like great handling cars and bikes and have always prioritised handling over outright power (I prefer 600cc race bikes to 1000cc for example) but I'm torn on which car to go for.....I know both will be great cars but I'm not sure if I will take a battering in depreciation on the M2 with it being fully loaded where the M4 has already taken the initial depreciation hit...... Is the M4 too big to be a proper sports car? It certainly looks so but it would also give me proper rear seats for the kids etc....... I would value the opinion of people who have driven the M3/M4.......at the moment I'm leaning towards the M2 as I think it will give the more involving drive and won't be quite as intimidating with 60BHP less but I'm definitely tempted by the M4 as well as it's cheaper.... |

That is a stunning colour combo
You need to ask yourself why you are buying the car, what does it have to deliver? I wouldn't buy the M4, it doesn't do it for me. I was actually quite disappointed when I took a test drive in a M3 from my supplying dealer (I hope I like the M2). M4's are also ten a penny round by me. I must have seen 3 or 4 when I was out earlier, this is probably also the reason they have taken a hit on the used market - this will be different for the M2 due to the limited supply - I've got to wait until March 2017 for mine! (first dibs on yours if you change your mind?). |

Welcome here.
I drove an M4 DCT for 3 days last week just to find out what it is(DCT vs 6MT) and having read your first post, I'd say, go for the M2. Because you prefer handling over power etc etc... M4 is a great and beautiful car, lots of power but huge and although planted in the curves not superagile... But as others stated, go on and testdrive that M4 if possible, but keep your reserved M2 as a backup. Don't say no to that car Cheers Robin |

Without running the numbers to give you advice down to the penny, I'd have to think you'd come pretty close to driving the car for "free" for 12-18 months vs doing the M2 now. By that I mean the car is 6k less to start, and will lose less over the period. Said another way, car is depreciated like you said and there aren't huge deals to be had on the M2 yet. You'd have to make some estimates but let's just say the M3 drops another 5k while you own it which seems reasonable, and in 12 mos you can get an M2 for 2.5k off sticker. You would have paid 200 per month to drive the m3. Compare that to getting the M2 now and I'd have to think you'd drop maybe 10k in depreciation in the first year based on residuals I've seen. Like I said all hypothetical since we are dealing with future values but worth considering. Also gets you closer to LCI M2.

Thanks
I'm going to test drive the M4 tomorrow evening after work. Agree the M4 will probably be cheaper over 3 years but we don't know what will happen with the M2 depreciation yet......there might even be a short term bubble where they are worth more than sticker because of the shortage...... |

I'm impressed. Feels a lot bigger than my old 911 and doesn't brake as well (I wouldn't have expected it to to be honest). Front end is solid and doesn't understeer at all. So much power you very quickly start to instinctively corner the car on the throttle..... Very tempted and it offers a lot of value but still think I need to drive the M2 as well......roll on 16th April |

Hi, i am like you where i prefer riding smaller bikes on the track compared to larger ones. (SV650 vs. cbr1k). Although I want to move up to an inline 600 at some point but that's another story .
I plan to track my car, and it's mostly a weekend car. I will chose the M2 as it is smaller and more track focus (less means more right?). Also, the tracks by me are relatively small to med size and I think i'll have more fun in the M2. I think the largest track would by NJMP t-bolt. let us know what you decide.
