It happened, guys asks what I drive then blurts out M2 is better!

So I am checking out Cars and Coffee Carlsbad just to see what it's all about. I happen to really like all sorts of cars, new and old, European, Asian and American. I am am checking out a Jaguar convertible and notice a plaque inside of it that says it is a real replica of a record setting car. By real, they mean it was done by Jaguar with a real Jaguar. The plaque said it went 141 miles per hour, probably in the 50s The guy next to it asked me if I had any questions. I had heard him talk to another guy about how it's not his car. He takes care of it for a car collector. Anyway, he says he uses cars and coffee as a destination to drive the cars and I said me to. He asks what I drive and I say 1M. He blurts as if he's been holding it back for years... "M2 is better!" Then he backs up slightly and says, "I heard M2 is better."

It was just strange. I never said 1M this or that, just blurts it out. I'm a little puzzled and he goes on that his buddy wants a 1M and he can't understand why because M2 is better... He says oh well and shrugs.

Anyway, it was such a weird way it happened and since I had a long drive home I thought about it. After an hour I got some perspective.

What is better? That is the crux of the whole problem on these forums! We all have different definitions of better! Most think the 1M interior is outdated, especially the No Nav version, but I find it beautiful and unique. Some guys think launch control is better because you can go faster. Some guys don't find any joy in the computer driving the car to achieve that fast time. Some consider a car that can go around the track faster as better.

Still if you balance it all, the M2 is probably better by popular opinion. I think it is aesthetically better looking despite the rear. It is quicker around the track and is easier to drive fast. It is not better for me because after I add up what I like and apply weight to each item, I really love the simplicity of the 1M cockpit, especially mine. I love what it says about me owning a car that was only offered in manual and you never see them on the road.

What made this encounter with the Jag guy so interesting is that he was complaining about the odd shifter and and a few things about his Jaguar, yet that Jag is probably worth 2 or 3 1Ms! I didn't think about it but now I wish I would have said, the 1M is better than your Jaguar. I can do 141 mph without breaking a sweat, stop is half the distance and probably hold twice the lateral Gs of his ride. So would that make the 1M better....probably yes! But not really. His Jag was a special car for it's time just like the 1M was a special car for its time that brought BMW credibility with us harder core car nuts. So yes the M2 is better because it's faster, more stable...then again not really.

What is "better" is what you think is better.

BTW, I also love the simple cockpit of the 1 series. Everything you need, nothing you don't.

Hahaha. Well, the M2 is "better" but it's also a completely different car that's bigger, looks a lot worse and has (in my opinion) an interior and steering wheel that blow in comparion although everybody seems to like them.

Ask the car sitter an intelligent question? Why is it better? A respectable response would be, "better and newer technology packed into an affordable coupé..." Otherwise, tell the wanker to sod off!

Seen as the M2 is the successor to the 1M and ofcourse media coverage of the M2 much stronger than it was back when the 1M was released you can tell why the general consensus will think its "better" without putting thought despite no real validation.

It's fun to look at other peoples' cars, but since I know that most people won't like my cars like I do, I'm not really that interested in their opinions.

I have had several people recently admire a couple of my cars. I'm not at all sure why, it struck me as rather odd, actually.

Better is kinda a bad and overly simplified word to compare 2 cars.

What make the 1M special is mostly because it doesn't work on paper. It's a part bin special that was designed to not overshadow the M3. And yet, every single choice they made contribute to making it a more driver focused/fun car than the M3 it was designed to not compete against and it had a definitive influence on the M4 design (TT 6 cylinder engine, lighter car etc)

Now the M2 is a well planned product to slot in a pre-determined slot in BMW lineup, so it lost a lot of the goofball factor.

The guy's probably one of the many who wished he'd bought a 1M, then sees them go up in price, so now he's making himself feel better by convincing himself about the M2.

It's very subjective, but in many ways the M2 is a "better" car, in other ways it is not - at least that's my opinion. For me the upsides of the M2 are in the areas that are less important to me. Hence why I personally have no interest in owning one over a 1M. (I am also not big fan of the way it looks, esp at the front).

All that matters is what you think of your car and how it takes you feel - anybody else can think what they like!

I've had people say the same thing on other automotive boards about the M2>1M.

Honestly, it didn't faze me one bit.

I've had many sports cars in the past (got bored of each one) but there is something about this one that keeps me smiling.

I think there is a lot of resentment out there to how difficult the car was to get and all the crap the dealers put people through, then the high used prices. So now that BMW has a viable alternative there might be some truth to a little backlash.

I actually think the guy is probably a nice guy and my comments were more about putting the 1M in perspective now. Every new car is usually "better" than the previous but some are more special.

Thank you.
