Hi All,

My check engine light came on last week and the dealership diagnosed cylinder 6 with low compression. The fix is to replace the two exhaust valves on cylinder 6 (part number 11 34 7 573 840)

I swung by the shop and took a couple of pics.

Question 1: does CPO cover intake valve cleaning? This dealership is saying it's not covered.

Question 2: Since the engine is out, how many hours would you say it would take to clean the valves? Regular price is $920 but they are quoting me $565. I feel the quoted price is high considering the engine is out.

Thanks.

1: not a snowball's change in hell

2: it might take 3 or 4 hours if you just use screwdriver / pick / solvent / brush and really take your time or 30 minutes if you use a soda / walnut blaster. Make sure you know what you're doing and rotate the crank to close the valves in each individual cylinder before you clean them.

Thanks for the quick response.

So the dealership is charging me close to 4 hours of labor for a 1 hour job?

Yeah, dealerships always overcharge, that's a big part of how they make money. Your engine is ready to go right now since it's out of the car, so keep in mind they normally have to remove / reinstall the intake manifold to clean the valves.

I understand that they would normally have to remove/reinstall the manifold for a valve cleaning but they would have had to do this anyway to replace the exhaust valves.

Am I being unrealistic for them to charge me the 1 hour of labor to clean the valves?

Is that the dealer by 183 on mcneil? I had a great experience there when they changed a blown charge pipe for me at 4PM on a Saturday. Nothing but mediocre experiences at best with the dealers here in Houston.

I've done plenty of walnut blasts on forum member's cars. Only takes a few minutes to clean each cylinder with 2 passes of walnut shells (including a small amount of scraping of the harder chunks).

I can't imagine it taking more than an hour of actual work. $565 is a total rip off.

Thanks for the info. I've told them I would pay an hour of labor. Let's see what they say.

Yup! My car was serviced at BMW of Austin. They did a great job! No complaints.

They agreed on 1 hour of labor plus parts. I'm very happy with the outcome!

Happy to hear that, but have they given any more detail as to what caused the valve issues on cylinder 6? Seems like a fairly uncommon failure mode.

I made a mistake in my original post (I've corrected it). They replaced the two exhaust valves (11 34 7 573 840) in cylinder 6. My advisor could not say what caused the exhaust valves to fail.

sounds strange for two valves to fail with no identified root cause. how do they know that replacing the valves corrects the issue?

They first thought it was the vanos adjustment unit (11 36 7 540 348) which they replaced but they were still getting a misfire fault on cylinder 6. When they performed a cylinder leak down test the exhaust valves were not holding pressure in the cylinder and ended up replacing the exhaust valves for cylinder 6.
