tire recommendations for 435i

hey guys, i have a 14 435i M sport with the 19s (F: 225/40 R19, R: 255/35 R19) and am ready for new tires. i got the following quote from my dealer. all prices include mouting/balancing, alignment, and taxes (7%):

1- Bridgestone Potenza 5001- $1755.29
2- Conti sport contact 5 - $1931.52
3- Godyears tires - $1677.76
4- Pirelli - $1836.12

i currently have the pirellil's and am ok with them. i really dont want to have to get new tires again before lease ends (i'm at 21K miles for a 36k mile lease). what do you guys think?

I think you should definitely go with a dealer. Those are great prices...

these prices are very fair. like i said, this is for four tires, mount/balance, alignment and all taxes... i would rather do this at bmw who is used to replacing run flats instead of tire kingdom and get my rims f*cked up

No, you're getting ripped. My BMW dealer (BMW of Annapolis) charges $160 for mount/road force balance of all 4 tires/wheels.

TireRack prices for the tires you have listed above:

(Run Flat Tires)
Bridgestone Potenza S001 - $1075
ContiSportContact 5 SSR - $1200
Goodyear Eagle F1 - $1050
Pirelli P Zero - $1160

(Non-Run Flat)
Michelin PSS - $1032

I actually did an alignment write up: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1171017

Dealer would charge anywhere from $200 to $400 so you may be within range. But I still say the dealer's overcharging. You might be better off buying your tires from TireRack and paying for them to do the alignment, mount, and road force balance.

ok, so lets do the math.

bridgestone tires from tire rack:

1075 - tires
70- shipping
70- tax
150- mount/balance (conservative estimate)
300 - alignment for cars with variable steering

total is 1665 vs 1755

so i can save $90 and go through that headache; but i prefer not to. but thanks for your suggestion.

now back to the original question; which tire would you guys recommend?

Here's somebody that understands my language too. You get what you pay for folks.

Unless you have been a long-term customer at a local shop where you know the guy, I would still go to the dealership.

First and foremost, if you haven't learned how to negotiate price at BMW dealerships, shame on you. You can get them down in price.

Second, dealerships notice when you utilize them, and will provide you with more deals and incentives the more you use them.

Third, it's on BMW if they scratch or ding your wheel. When installing 18s or 19s RFTs that aren't very pliable, there's bound to be an issue. BMW will fix it right up, other places will say "it was there before hand".

Many people have had poor experiences at "stealerships"; I'm not one of them. I'd rather support my local dealership that will invite me to driving events, send me away to a free driving school, and give me deep discounts on inventory since I'm known there on a first name basis with everyone. I tend to get better appointment times, better loaners.

For me, that's worth $50 here, $90 there.

Plus, BMW is not going to mount tires you got elsewhere.

To answer your question, I just got some poor tread life out of the bridgestone's, which was unusual since the previous generation lasted me quite some time. So I'd avoid them for now.

My BMW dealership will mount/balance tires I purchased elsewhere... see below.

I went with them because I'm okay with paying the premium ($40 per corner) because of the quality of their work and the equipment they use.

As for alignments, I can do that myself on-post because I can borrow weights from my unit and use the Hunter Elite Hawk alignment machine at the Auto Skills Center for $60.

i have no problem with dealerships; as long as they are open about their pricing. i get all my work done there since a indy shop destroyed the rims on my old 5 series trying to get the tires off.

you seem like the kind of person who is very hands on; and thats awesome. i have friends like you who think i'm crazy for taking my car to the dealership for brakes (when i had an out of warranty bmw), OMG you can do it yourself! i understand that, but my time is money. i have a hard job, a wife, and two young kids. so instead of spending an entire day trying to do an alignment myself i would rather drop it off at the dealer, pick up a loaner, and spend the day doing what i want. that to me is worth a lot more than a few hundred dollars.

I'd say Michelin Pilot Super Sport, as i am already running Pirelli P Zero Nero and feel like am driving an i3. But Pirellis are the best on your list if anything

Bottom line: I think the price you were quoted is within an acceptable range range since it includes a (proper) alignment.

Since you're recommending the Michelins, what do you recommend for emergencies?

You keep a donut at all times in the trunk?

See i think this is something you need to have in your trunk, but to be honest i have performance tires non RFTs with no spare.

So you live on the edge like I do with my winter tires...

Thanks for the input!

i definitely strongly considered getting pilot super sports and adding a fix a flat solution (like the M cars have) but my car is a lease and i would need to turn it in with run flats

I'd double check on that. Most of the time when they CPO vehicles they change the tires anyway, sometimes even the rims.

Fix a flat kit. The cost of the donut is almost the same as getting a full size spare.

If your sidewall is damaged, well, you're similarly screwed with RFTs and non-RFTs.

i asked my CA and according to him you have to turn the car in with run flats above a certain tread level
