WTF: Warburton Toll bridge- what a waste of time!

Coming back down south today and the M6 is chaos and RTTI showing carnage for miles and the overhead signs saying at least an hour delay so I take the detour through Cheshire and end up in a worse traffic jam for what turns out to be a 12 pence toll charge to use a simple bridge over a canal.
12 feckin pence!!!!!

I'd rather have paid a tenner for 80 cars to whizz through and saved myself half an hour of my life I won't get back.

I feel sorry for anyone who lives round there and has to put up with that piss take.

£0.12 that's funny.

http://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/...arges/?ref=rss

Seems they thought of dropping the charge in times of serious M6 congestion....

Hey don't knock it, it helps pay for the bread

There are quite a few '10p' tolls around the country.

They should make the charges £1 and then less people would use them, and they'd still make more money, and the folk using wouldn't have to queue forever.... Market forces are a good thing if used properly

Used to go over that bridge twice daily to work and back and can queue from the lights up to the toll booth on a normal morning even when the m6 is fine, I avoid it like the plague now.

The toll was actually for the small stone bridge you went over just before the toll booth, not the big bridge over the canal as the small stone bridge was owned by a farmer as it crosses over his field just before the booth, but it was supposed to have been bought a few years ago by peel ports or the Manchester ship canal company (not sure who) who could now get rid of the booth but they won't as its a good money maker.

Down the road from me, went over it yesterday on the way to the Lymm Duck Race!

It is a massive pain at rush hour, especially when the elderly couple are taking the fees.

I just can't believe it exists in this day and age! It's the most monumental waste of time for so many people. If you added up the man hours spent in that queue multiplied by average hourly rate earned it would come up to an amount way in excess of the 12p.

I was on my way from home to Witney and thought I'd take the scenic route.

Couldn't believe my eyes when this bloke in a tiny booth held out his hand. I just didn't see any signs or anything!

A quick scrabble around later I found a 10p and handed it over and in split second of excruciating embarrassment said "keep the change". What a twat!

There was no barrier so I wonder what they'd do if you just didn't stop?

Ha yeah I wondered that.

A bit like those people that leave flowers/veg/fruit by the side of the road and position an honesty box next to it. Or books. Lovely quaint old-fashioned notion of trust innit.

I suspect they keep it like that to try and stop people avoiding the motorway. If there are problems on the motorways M62/M6 it's carnage around Warrington.

Mental! I get about a bit but I've never had the misfortune to come across them thankfully.

Oh and Pangbourne is a nice place the Bentley/lambo/Aston garage takes you by surprise as you come through the village.

Another one on the road between Tuxford and Lincoln - Dunham Bridge, about 20p to cross these days. Used to cause fantastic queues at bank holidays as all the day trippers tried to get to the East Coast!

Can't believe how many of them there are still around

I can't the the scene from Blazing Saddles out of my mind, where all the cowboys queue up to pay the toll...
