Exclamation Oil Cooler Fan

Hi,

My car has the stock oil cooler, and it looks real small for our engine. I was thinking to install fan on it, to cool it, rather spending $$$ on upgrading the oil cooler.

You're still trying to use a cooler that's too small. The fan might (also might not) help a little, but you still need to upgrade the size of the core if you want the effect of a cooler upgrade.

Oil flow volume in an engine isn't that high, so you don't need a huge oil cooler. The lower the flow, the longer the fluid stays in the cooler which gives it more time to cool down. The factory one should be sufficient for most unless you are tracking the car. Have you seen any problems with oil temps?

Where i live its hot and i think oil temp will go up if i drive hard. I was thinking of taking the thermostat out so the oil flows to the cooler right away.

You have an oil temp gauge on the dash. I would make sure you have a problem or else you may be trying to solve a problem you don't even have.

I dont have a problem.
It gets like 100F here, and if i drive hard, sure the temp will go up.

So yeah, then the fan definitely won't do anything. When you get on it the oil cooler gets more airflow through it than the fan will produce.

In traffic the fan will work better.
I can put it behind the cooler this way it will suck the hot air out

A fan will actually inhibit the coolers ability to function well at speed.

I also own a Mazda RX-8 Turbo that comes with two oil coolers about the size of the cooler my 335i has and I did a bit of testing on my RX-8 with fans a couple years back and I used a nice Spal fan and it just did nothing. At idle it will drop temps a small amount but at speed temps were higher.

A better/larger cooler in the way to go. I now use a large BEHR oil cooler from an S class mercedes as a secondary oil cooler on my RX-8.

Right, so it'll make a marginal difference in traffic and zero difference at the speeds you said you were concerned about. Again, you simply need a bigger/better cooler to do what you want.

I agree. There's a couple of upgraded kits out there

Nothing will replace an upgraded oil cooler. The oil gets hotter than any external fan can affect.
