Smart Home Security
Just been looking into beefing up the home security and I have been looking at outdoor IR detectors. I don't want a simple one that is wireless back to it's own panel and alarms.
I'm after something that is connected to my home network and alarms back to my phone and is also able to work on a timer, so is not alerting when I go near the car etc. I suppose I could get more cameras and set detection zones to alert me might be the simplest way to do it? I have looked at the Samsung Smart stuff, Panasonic, etc. But none of them seem to offer outdoor kit. Anyone got something they already use or can recommend? Cheers!! |

It depends on budget, I use a Synology NAS which all come with free (but excellent) Surveillance software and 2 IP camera licences. If you want more than 2 cameras you have to buy more licences (about £45 a pop). You can then connect any supported indoor / outdoor IP cameras which is pretty much most of them as I think Synology support 4000+ makes and models.
I use these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hikvision-DS...ords=hikvision mounted externally, the day and night vision quality is excellent. The Synology software allows you to configure email/SMS alerts if motion is detected and there is an iOS app that allows you to live view the footage anywhere in the world.

@sms720 any recommendations for a decent Synology NAS box (I'd be getting it really for this purpose alone, so don't care about mega storage space. Would like the hardware to be decent though so that any apps perform decently with good UI response.

For surveillance the key thing is to decide on the number of cameras as that will determine your space requirements and licencing. I am currently using a 4 Drive NAS with 2 built in licences but because I am expanding my system to 9 cameras and don't want to buy another 7 licences at £45 each I am getting one these: https://www.synology.com/en-uk/products/NVR216 This will mean my current NAS can go back to being a fileserver. For a standard 4 disk NAS I would recommend this model: https://www.synology.com/en-uk/products/DS416 Which could also be used with 2 IP cameras out of the box.

I currently have a similar setup with a QNAP NAS and two Foscam cameras recording 24x7. The problem is hooking up more wired cameras into that due to kit location. I have been looking at new camera kits from Swann and a couple of other companies. But I like the idea of some sort of devices/app alarming of wifi start to phone rather than over email. Not found anything yet though. |

I've not actually tried it but the Synology system supports push alerts to your phone.

I bought the 416J last year, it's very quiet and exceptionally simple to use.
Setup is a doddle, decent apps. For cameras setup, you can have various detection setups, motion, object missing etc. For any NAS I suggest folder encryption. |

+1 for Synology. I have a mixture of 1, 2 and 4 bay Synology NAS drives dating back to an old DS108j being the first one I ever bought. I haven't used the surveillance package but the devices themselves and the packages I do use have been very reliable and I only once had an issue which was quickly sorted by their support.

We've just this past week been having double glazing put it (replacing old timber framed units) and they put the door in today. Came with an Ultion lock
http://www.ultion-lock.co.uk/ They'll give us £1000 if someone breaks in via the lock. Hoping never to have to claim! |

Actually Ultion are good locks. The problems is people buy these thing fit them to a mock up door in middle of garage etc and see how to get past the security. Most modern locks are snap proof, it's how decent the tamper pins are with bump detection (how bump proof they are). You can buy bump keys etc for a few quid. With more and more plastic doors, we seem to stop bog standard bolts. They are cheap and work great for when home. |

I have a ABS euro cylinder on front door and a yale 3 star one on porch. Combined with a decent handle (Hoppe PAS24) its prob the best you can do really with vPVC doors.
