battery wire hanging around

Replaced my battery today and noticed there was a wire just hanging around and not connected. Didn't connect it after replacing the battery because
a. it wasn't connected before and
b. couldn't find anywhere to connect it.

What is this wire for and why is it hanging around?
Car starts fine with the new battery. . .

This has been asked dozens of times... it's supposed to be disconnected. It has something to do with transporting the car when it was new.
