I've always heard BAD THINGS about ALL AFTER MARKET WARRANTIES when I asked friends and even the BMW Dealerships. YELP them you will read some horror stories!

I almost got one for my car I think it was GP or GAP (the one that MotorTrend is said to recommend). It would have added $3000 to the price of the car stating everything was covered for up to 4 or 5 years/50,000 miles.

But when I googled and yelped them it was super scary reading stories of people who said they still had to pay upfront for tow service and shop labor and wait months before getting reimbursed OR NOT getting reimbursed because they did not choose a shop or tow service that the warranty service recommended (which would likely happen if your car breaks down somewhere far from home and you need to get it towed right away and towed to the nearest shop). People were also livid to find out the warranties ONLY provided aftermarket parts (or you could only choose from the warranty company's own parts source I.E Chinese and Asian after market parts).

Most Warranty also claim that they will honor dealership work and parts but the fine print reads you will have to pay upfront and wait to be reimbursed. This is also a secondary set of fine or invisible print to that since most often the Warranty Company reserves the right to decline any service or parts you already paid for while your car is under their warranty.

Even people that had positive experiences with Warranty Repair usually will say they NEVER spent as much as the warranty cost on repairs had they not opted for the warranty.

In other words I reasoned that a 2011 335i xDrive would not need over $3,000 in break down repair under the 5 years or 50,000 miles that the warranty covered.

I understand the E90 cars can be sour lemons and extremely unreliable BUT still you are opting to spend money for a service that may not even cover you!

BMW Dealership also have their own after after after sales warranty that costs like $2000 for 1 year. I would rather go for that.

I'm happy with my third party warrantee. MaxCare (though you can't buy it separately). I'm $90 away from them paying out more for repairs than it cost with 3 years still to run. Though I do take my car to the BMW dealer for service and repairs as it's close to my house and the loaner makes it wonderfully convenient.

$3000 in repairs is NOTHING for a german car if you have to pay someone to do the work.

I am considering companies also and delta gave me a great price 2400 for an extra 100k miles or 5 years premium coverage. The reviews on consumer reviews look good on the surface but not sure if they're real or even reliable. Most of them look like they never have used the service and they gave 5 star reviews. I'd like to know how it was to deal with them when they service was required and if they paid the dealership.

also delta quoted me 2400 for my 2007 335i with 52k miles. Was for 100k additional miles or 5 yrs. Im just curious if they pay well when it comes time to file or its a pain.

This is true. Actually I had originally assumed most things an be DIY'ed on the E90 like my E46 but the E90 is very unfriendly when it comes to big engine bay DIY jobs.

Still I rather have AAA for tow and keep the $3,000 in my pocket for when I break down.

Being a long time member of this community I have the mental preparedness of what can go wrong and when it may go wrong. I also have a mental map of all the preemptive symptoms of poo hitting the fan.

OP you bought a 8yr old German car with a retractable hardtop and now your worried about parts failing?? You like another new forum member searching for warranties for an OLD car have probably have stepped out of your $$$ lane. I would not trust any company that would warranty a German car that old because their parts are bound to fail. Keep that $3k in your pocket and search for a reputable INDY

Cool

Hmmm... All Valid statements. I would get it since you only have 82k miles. Route 66 is good, I can recommend OmniSur as they paid well over 10x what I paid for the warranty. I definitely would not pay all that 3k up front though... They should offer monthly payments..Also, finding a grade A reputable Indy will save u a lot of headaches when it comes to dealing with warranty companies... Best Wishes!

same here, heard lots of great things about route 66 from the forums here but was offered a seemingly better deal (100k extra miles or 5 yrs) for 2400$ by delta auto protect. I haven't heard much about them though so I don't know if I trust them.

Route 66 offered 50k additional miles or 5 yrs for 3k, what would you guys do?

I've only heard good things about Route66. I think the extra $600 is worth knowing that 66 will actually pay out when something happens.

I bought my e90 from a Ford dealership and bought the Ford extended warranty which has covered everything through my local BMW dealer. Turbos, VC gasket, OFHG etc no problems at all.

I had an aftermarket warranty from First Canadian on my MINI which I bought at a Lexus dealer. It was about $3000 for four years and it paid for itself and then some, just with little shit like leaks, gaskets, motor mounts, etc. I'm sure I could have DIY'd all that stuff for less, but the convenience of just dropping it off and getting a loaner was nice.

On the E90, I had 2 years of CPO and then added 4 years of warranty from whatever company the dealership pushes, can't remember off the top of my head. So I'm covered for 6 years now. Haggled it down to $2750 for 4 years, with a few refund options if I don't use it at all

Roll the entire warranty onto another car
$2000 Dealership credit (parts, down payment, whatever.)
$1000 Cash

Considering the dealer is something like $150/h and I got a good price on the car I figured it was a safe enough bet.

I made the mistake of buying a 3k warranty on my 08 bmw 335xi with 55k on it at the time now first week water pump went out and they covered it. I ended up getting addicted to modding and now my transmission is going out. Pretty much I wasted 2500. I am a DIY guy. I have 70k on my car now technically covered till 102k I think or something. Moral of the story is if you plan to mod save the cash if you plan on being stock go for it. Also found out my warranty does NOT cover leaking seals smfh unless a part goes out that needs a seal replaced in conjunction with the failing part so be careful and read the fine print. Bought mine from my Credit union when I financed the car. Paid out of pocket week 2 when I realized my front differential was leaking for that seal. My warranty is interstate I think or something like that. Anyways good luck!

I've decided to bag it. I own the car outright and can afford the maintenance/surprises. And I just bought a Cobb. Thanks for all the feedback!

Buy one from your credit union. Route 66 is one such name. I boutght mine, and glad I did. Seemed like a waste of money, but its paid over 10K in repairs. Turbos, gaskets, water pump. Any thing that risks the engine is covered. And I didnt even have bumper to bumper. Its key to have an indy who is willing to work with you. Remember warranty companies know are common issues with this car, and that they dont really expect to make money from us N54 owners. Its the reliable Japanese cars that they make money on. @82K I highly recommend getting it. Expect things that go wrong to go wrong in the next 10-20K miles. Mine didnt have a single problem till 110K, then it cost 10K in various parts and labor to fix it all up. Even w/o labor its easily 5K+.

Hard to believe a BMW dealership would tell you that.

Seriously? There are always going to be detractors, but Route 66 is legit and my credit union would NOT sell their warranties if they didn't do what they say they will do. They are extremely customer-focused and would not offer a sham product. Sorry, it simply isn't true.

Why the hell would you believe a BMW stealership that wants you to buy THEIR warranty (at a higher cost) than Route 66?
