330i or 335i?
Hi all,
I own a 330i and love it 6MT. However I'm starting to feel I need more speed. Long story short I'm looking at this 335i low miles and clean as heck. However I've read that 335i have turbo problems and it's pricey to fix, something. We don't have to worry on 330i' So two questions: Will I feel a big difference in speed on a 335i? Eh I don't track it but I like more power. How reliable is 335i? My car is perfect no problems at all, and by at all I mean at all. This 335i 120k miles for a great price. What are you thoughts? Stick to my 330i 6MT or 335i automatic. Which one will be funner more reliable. |

People need to stop posting these kinds of new threads.

get a proper 2nd weekend sports car. I don't consider getting into 335 an upgrade. An M3, Cayman, Corvette, Elise, even a used Ferrari 360, move up to exotics.

You should keep your 330i and add some LCI tail lights & white LED halos to make it a little more modern. 255 HP for a 3.0L NA is pretty awesome, plus it had such a short run. Turbocharging is really fun, but if you've already got a 330, stay with it.

keep the 330i if you only are considering this 335i AT. MTs are more fun to drive.
you don't "need" more speed, you "want" more speed. find a 335i MT if you can then.

it really depends
If you are buying something newer like the n55 sure it is an upgraded and you will have more speed. If you are buying a n54 , then you are buying first gen which has reported more problems... I would even go as far as saying that m235 would be a much better upgrade if you have a big enough budget |

120k is kind of questionable on a probably ~10 year old used BMW, especially a model known to have reliability issues. Even more so if you're planning to tune/mod it. If you have the money to fix things when they break, then by all means.
I'd personally keep the 330i and save up money for a newer/better car down the road.

335i All day long if you know how to work on cars it gets addicting modding these cars and they can be fast with low $$ spent on mods. Its hard to stop now looking at upgraded turbos myself lol after I rebuild my transmission

i say keep the 330i - ive had mine since '14 and planning on moving forward at the end of this year, possibly tax return time next year...
save those shillings and move up a grade. its reliable as heck and whatever issues u may encounter will only run u $2-$400 bucks at most. |

this topic has been battered to death too many times.
you could test drive a 335i and see how you like it - then make your mind up. Yes there will be issues but then there are always going to be issues with turbo cars regardless of make and brand. I was having the same issue but I test drove the 335i first. Didn't even bother going to see the 330i after, bank transfer there and then and bought the car.

If you can do all the work on your car yourself, a 335i isn't too expensive to maintain really... If you have to go to a garage each time something needs fixed and you're on a tight budget, then this car is not for you.
I bought my 335i 3 years ago and it had 65k miles. It now has 150k miles on the clock and here is a list of what I've replaced, how much it cost me and how much it would have cost at the dealer: Blown coolant hose + coolant flush: DIY = $65 - Dealer price $495 Replaced 6 injectors: DIY = $1,050 - Dealer price = $2,350 Replaced two turbos: DIY = $520 (bought used turbos with 10k miles) - Dealer price = $4,200 Replaced water pump + thermostat : DIY = $350 - Dealer price = $1,600 Replaced starter : DIY = $125 - Dealer price = $1,450 Replaced brake rotors + pads: DIY = $470 - Dealer price = $1,400 Replaced the spark plugs 3 times: DIY = $210 - Dealer price = $1,080 Replaced the ignition coils: DIY = $140 - Dealer price = $500 Replaced the clutch: DIY $500 - Dealer price = $2000 I'm not including oil changes, but you get the idea. DIY total cost is around $3500 - Dealer cost is around $15,000

120k mile 335 with auto?
It's gonna need suspension plus whatever breaks to be 'fun'. Even then if you equate stick with fun then likely you won't be happy. Acceleration is certainly other worldly, but why buy some high mileage maintenance queen? There's a reason why it's cheap...all high mileage e9x cars are cheap, but they make up for that when they need repairs. |

You'll love the power a 335i can offer, but don't buy one unless it's got low miles and complete maintenance records.
Something with at least 1 year of "free maintenance" so a car about 4 years old with around 30,000 miles.

You have a 328 so your consideration shouldn't be considered.
