*if* (and it looks like a big if) the electronics are intact, you can buy replacement cases off eBay

Yep, you'll have no problem with that on warranty....it's a known fault.

Have seen some second hand ones on flea bay for less

Can they be reprogrammed / coded etc or is it only the criminal fraternity that can do this ??

from when my car got nicked, I seem to recall the dealer telling me that a key was about £50 - I could be way off there though

Pop into your local police station and ask if a BMW key has been handed in? There are always loads in there.
