Minor Damage but needs paint.....what to do
So I went to lunch with some co-workers today and was rudely interrupted by some lady screaming I just hit a blue BMW. I immediately knew that my day was ruined.
Here is my dilemma now. I live in F'ing South Dakota. The closest dealership is 5hrs away to the east and south. I received a quote for paint locally at a pretty reputable body shop, however, Denver has a collision center at Murray BMW. Is it worth the gamble to let the local shop do the minor paint fix or should I suffer through the inconvenience of doing the work 5hrs away? I am really just worried about the paint match, although I would have the local shop buy C16 and not attempt to match. |

I would try the local shop. If they don't do a great job, ask them to paint it again.
Also no guarantee the collision center will do a great job. I've taken my past car to a collision center that was BMW certified and they sucked, had to respray the car 4 times to finally do it right. |

My sting recommendation is to only take it to a BMW certified collision center. The fact is any bodyshop can screw things up but the two responses above are the only cases I have heard of issues with their certified centers. My E90 had $24,000 worth of repairs, they were extensive and the center that did the work on my car did such a good job that not one of my friends nor three technicians that I have asked can tell where the damage was done or repaired. The big thing is being affiliated with BMW protects you, if you don't like the work BMW will make it right. We are going around and around with a shop that did a simple repair on my wife's Honda Accord and totally screwed up the job. I wish I would have taken it to a Honda dealer so I would have someone to complain to above the idiot manager.

I would do BMW repair as well. Especially since this ladys insurance is paying for it and the the inconvenience for you.
They should pay your time off work and for a rental. side question - where did you get your M stripe kidney grill?

I 100% agree that it should be done via BMW since it's going through her insurance and she should cover all costs associated with the repair. |

Thanks for all of the replies.....here is the status
1.). Murray BMW of Denver will be doing the repairs. Quote was $1000 from a local shop but I didn't like the comment "we will try our best to match the factory paint..." Car is going in on Friday. 2.). Her insurance will be paying for a rental and also will be cutting me a check for diminished value of the car. Amount is TBD.... 3.). I did the grill myself with a steady hand, some hobby paint, and a little clear. I know they sell the grills, but I had the materials lying around. 4.). Lastly, the women who hit my car was very surprised by how fancy my "hubcaps" are... |

What??? Dude just paid over 50k for a brand new car and he should drive it around with damage so he can pocket a grand? Then when he goes to sell it guess what, he will lose far more than that grand in resale value. That is a pretty silly suggestion. Blows me away actually.

Err...i can't find the name anymore. let me go home and get the paint so i can get the name of the company that matched it.
I know at the time, BMW didn't have this paint in there system. (oh now i remember what I did - i looked but the BMW X5M LBB as that is the exact same paint code). But i'll find try to find the name of my vendor. |

They warned that metallic paints don't brush on the same as they spray on, so the application adhesion/viscosity may be a little wonky and may appear slightly darker. I have my xpel installer applying the touch up tomorrow before installation. We'll see how it works... |
