Hi all,

I am just looking for any opinions on the MK6 GTi you guys might have? Preferably from owners who know the car.

I have a Stage 1 325D E92 M Sport which I love to bits, love the torque and the MPG at the same time!

However, with 19" wheels and M Sport suspension I am being driven crazy on our terrible roads. And have started obsessing over the MK6 GTi.

Just wondering if I'm being daft or if its a good move?

If I went to a MK6 GTi it would be mapped to stage 1, uprated exhaust, lowered with uprated shocks and that is about it to begin with.

Thoughts?

+1 You could probably improve the E92 ride with better shocks

+2 cost effective to change the shocks and springs on the e92 than change the car, then map it and change suspension on the golf

Once you go bmw its hard to go any other make

I test drove the evoque couple of days ago and although it felt nice, when ingot back in to my 2008 e92 i was sold immediately lol

Felt more solid and better place to be in than a 2012 evoque

Mk6 GTI ISVs nice car and does what it does well but lacks that something the same as the mk5 did plus you have the usual VW mechanical problems which seem to manifest one or the other across the model generations and more worryingly they aren't that good at looking after customers when it comes warranty especially to claims relation to rusting wings etc (the very reason I sold my dub and came the BMW route after many years of VW ownership)

If you go the VW route and the GTI and want to mod for a better experience the best DUB maps are hands down done at AMD Essex and with the additional milltek exhaust and some tweaks to the handling with some eibach springs and some whiteline console bushes and block with the change in geo make the chassis as it should be (my mk5 was transformed by this)

Personally I'd stick with the BM buddy. My 335i is a bit harsh over the bumps on 19"a but a lowered golf would surely be much worse I'd have thought. Maybe put some 18" wheels on the bm.
My mk2 jetta gti 16v was very choppy before I lowered it & lot worse afterwards, not as bad as my beetle was though & yes I know you can't compare a 1986 mk2 gti with a Mk6. But my lowered e34 was a much better ride than the jetta. And the jetta blew a hole the size of a 50p in the gearbox.

Maybe 18's and after market suspension is the answer! The only thing I dislike is the harsh ride, everything else is superb!

Trouble is, I can't imagine any after market suspension set-ups will make it less crashy? I had progressive springs on my civic and they were pretty good to be honest, but I imagine if I went for progressive springs I would need new shocks too, and I doubt there are many out there made for comfort?

I've done some reading up on these following your recommendation and the reviews sound exactly like what I'm after!

I'm afraid not but all the reviews I've read have been favourable, I'd certainly fit them if I was changing shocks

I've read some people complaining of a bouncy ride with FSDs when pushing them.

Another comfy option is Koni yellows with Eibachs. This is another tried and tested platform, and with the yellows dampers can be adjusted.

I'm swaying more towards the FSDs for the simple fact that they will be cheaper and are less of a noticeable modification (i.e lowering the car).

How many miles has your motor done? Maybe the suspension is just past its best?

FYI. The M3 suspension is far less crashy than my old 335, even with it set to hardest setting. I'd say there may be a combination of reasons for this.

1. It's a superior product to start with
2. It's only done 30k
3. The tyres are thicker (235/40/19, 265/35/19)
4. Never been run on run flats

You can fix 1, 2 and 4 with aftermarket suspension.
Running fatter 19's is a little more tricky, so 18's is probably the only route there.

I don't think harder suspension necessarily means crashy. Good firm suspension feels good to drive, even if a little hard on bumps. The stuff on my old car was great to start with, nice and firm, but by the time i sold it it was awful. Crashy is the word. It just didn't absorb anything in a controlled manner and resulted in a very poor ride.

The car has covered 70K on what I imagine are the original shocks (no receipts to say otherwise).

I am in two minds now, I have started looking at the Audi S3 now and am really attracted to it.

A nice 2009+ S3 with an intake, exhaust and stage 1 map will run circa 300bhp happily. It's more refined than the GTI and is AWD rather than FWD...
