Trunk panel differences and electronics

It was noted in my photo thread (http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126672) that my left side trunk liner panel is different than some others. Here is mine, followed by an pic of rvacha's:

It appears the difference is mine was ordered with the HD radio tuner, which resides right under that plastic cover. It is labeled "Visteon 7B IBOC tuner". Below that is the rack for mounting the CD changer and below that the amp. Cars without HD seem to not have this extra compartment. Installing the CD changer in these cars will require the mount and new trunk liner panel.

Thanks Greg. I agree, on page 2 of the document you attached to your thread, it indicates that the liner you have is required for the HD radio.

Looks like it will be tougher to take golf clubs with HD. That must be a good size tuner. You would have thought it would have been pretty small except for the antenna, which I assume is the shark fin.

The tuner is small. What is taking most the space is the rack for the optional CD changer, which sets behind the door and under the tuner. I guess they didn't want three different panels. There's not quite enough room with the low profile one for the HD tuner.

As far as golf clubs, you have the folding seat backs, assuming you don't need to carry four people.

Ahhh, makes sense. Could not picture that large of a tuner. Makes the fold down seat option or cold package more attractive in the sedan to make up for the loss of width in the trunk.

You could make the trunk real cool by putting all sorts of compartments and stuff, but the purpose of a trunk is to haul stuff. The corner nooks really limit the longer items and packing smaller items around suitcases. Not a huge deal, but I do not see the point of losing the space for the future chance I would add a cd changer. With USB available, why would you want to limit yourself to 6 cds when you can have hundreds or thousands ready to select through the menu system.

Greg, if you open your panel whats inside? Storage bin?

I've ordered the CD changer for my M3 which has HD Radio (have alot of CDs not yet ripped to mp3s) ... and wasn't sure to order the mounting kit and new panel? Looks like you've answered my query though ... probably wont need the panel, however not sure on the mounting kit??

I looked inside of the space on my car (w/ HD radio) and there is alot of empty space inside (CD changer slot) and you can see the Amp beneath. I can post picks if anyone wants. ?

Here's a photo with the top panel off and front door open. HD tuner is at the top; rack for mounting the CD changer is underneath.

3/20 Edit: Found these on my build list -- 653 HD radio; 693 Sattelite radio preparation; 694 CD changer preparation

I wish I saw this thread sooner...

When I added SAT radio to my old e92, they converted the trunk using the same housing...

FWIW- I was still able to fit 2 sets of clubs in the back... it's not too obtrusive.
