Smokey exhaust and random check engine light?
Hello everyone,
I picked up a '09 335i xDrive e92 approximately one and a half months ago. The car came with about 50k miles. Had carbon blasting done, and the hpfp failed on me so had that replaced under bmw warranty. Now the car has begun to let out smoke from the exhaust, I've been informed by my BMW SA that I will need new spark plugs, and maybe some coils quite soon but they didn't mention anything else. The smoke will only appear on idle, when at a stop, and when stopping and going quickly and occurs about 50% of the time. I tried out the actuator valve mod and loved the sound of the exhaust, however this made the smoke much much worse and occurred almost always. It would billow out on idle and let off smoke during driving as well. I had another driver actually pull up in traffic and let me know I should get it fixed. After undoing the mod the amount of smoke is back to how it was before - bearable. It smells like something is burning btw. This brings me to my question of what might be causing this? I've heard all e9x 35i's let some smoke out, but its getting a bit much for me. On a side note, not sure if this is related to the smoke. But as I drove home yesterday my car threw a check engine light and shuddered under acceleration past 1800rpm. The light went out by itself about 30 seconds later and all was good with the N54. |

Thanks TBN54 and mojobmw_e90,
I replaced my spark plugs today and the car runs like a dream. Smoke has lessened in the last week or so but is still around now and then. Also found out that my engine cover is missing a bolt, and the lower cowl is not held in by anything other than its placement in the engine bay and the cable it secures... Oh well, Duct Tape is holding the cowl tight in place until I get some bolts. Last edited by WestCoast3; 06-23-2016 at 01:55 AM.. |
