Tips on buying a NEW car
I'm seriously considering a 335i and will be test driving one soon (I hope).
Forgive me if its been brought up before - I kept timing out and getting fatal errors when trying the search function. So what is the process to follow when buying a new car? I've only bought a used car before. Looking for tips and suggestions - especially those that will help me negotiate at the dealer. So far what I've picked up is the following: 1. Know the car - do research, understand the issues (ie. HPFP for the 335, want an oil cooler, etc.) 2. Probably order the invoice pricing from a site like carcostcanada.com? I assume it would be worthwhile - does everyone do this? 3. Negotiate like crazy, be prepared to walk out. Is there a certain time to go - like at the end of the month like I've heard? Anything else would be appreciated!! Canucklion, don't flame me, I honestly did try to search! |

I didn't do the cost thing and ordered mine back in October 07 and delivered on Dec 31. I got 4.25% off MSRP for a E90 335i with sport and premium plus they gave me decent price on my trade.

well, first, pick up a high speed connection for your house
i kid i kid...anywho, the main things i believe are to find out all the available options there are your your trim level and GET all these trim levels you want. i know i missed out on CA and other stuff....and negotiate like crazy. you have nothing to lose. think of it this way, the dealer will never sell you a car below their cost. if they sell it to you, they are still walking away smiling. just come to an agreement where you think is reasonable. someone somwhere will ALWAYS get a better deal than you so dont be too alarmed that you paid more. they may be dating the owner of the dealership or doin his brother or sister or whatever...a little on the side... and yes, have fun with it!

Your best bet is to talk about how much you like the Audi A4/A5, Mercedes C350, IS350 or the G37 coupe. Make it seem like the 335 is not your first choice. Believe me, I'm in sales. There is nothing worse then a potential customer using your competition against you. Follow my wise words!

i used the bluffing method~ just act like somebody gave you a really good price quote and see if they can beat it~ but remember~! always have them shooting in the dark, never gave them what you have until you get close to what you want~

Had a one owner 04 TSX with 69000km and they gave me $20500 plus GST ($21730) and I think it wasn't bad at all. The car needs 2 new tires and windshield. I tried to sell it privately for $23000 which I think it is fair and I did not get a single phone call.

when I was getting e92 335 last summer they were REALLY hot, I tried few dealers and all wanted msrp price... I then called another dealership and tolled sales guy "dealer X is offering me 3.5% off, if you give me 4% off I'll come in today and sign the papers", and he goes "ok come in and we'll talk"... so I come in and he starts telling me how it's "impossible" because it's a brand new model that everyone wants, i told him i'm not backing down even a penny... so we talk for like 40 minutes and he says he can't do it, I toled him thanks for waisting my time and if he changes his mind to give me a call very soon (since ill be getting at 3.5% from the other dealer) and I walk out... he calls me next day saying they can match 3.5% off, I tell him I want 4%, he says "lemme call you back".. he then calls me the next day saying I got a deal... moral of the story stick to your guns and don't back down, be ready to walk out as well... since coupes aren't as hot anymore, i'm sure you an get 6-7% off easily

HFFP are fuel pumps that have been known to go a little wonky, particularly with earlier versions for the 335.

The oil cooler, yes, especially if you want to track the car, or have plans to get a Dinan flash, then it totally makes sense to think ahead. |

Well, what I meant there was that you should know what potential problems you're buying (even new) - I'm not convinced that the 08's do not have a problem, although certainly there seems to be less failures in 08's.
So I meant, know what you're getting into - can you deal with having to go back and forth to the dealership a couple times (flexible, do you have the type of job where this might leave you stranded and cost you money by not being able to work, or travel to make sales, etc)? It is not likely to help too much in the negotiations (unless buying used) as the dealer seems to be quite willing to replace them. Hopefully that helps explain? Btw - very very interested in this 6.1% off that was negotiated by Alessandro - can you tell me which dealership and who you dealt with? |

In my opinions...
If you can get around 3.5%~4% off, that's good enough... You still need to let your sales make some money...right? or if you decide that you will never buy another BMW or do any service with them....then you can try harder...

On $50,000, half a percent is $250. Not that much money to be losing that much sleep over and fuss about that you didn't get the "perfect" deal, in my opinion. If you're off the avg. by more than one percent, then yes, it starts to add up and may be worth pushing more for, but negotiation is not an exact science and can't be repeated the same way in each transaction either.
Each party's motivation is what drives the process, which will be different for each transaction, so don't get too hung up about being 1% off what someone else got. Good luck and feel happy about the purchase in the end. The $500 more you feel you could have got is totally immaterial over the years of ownership. |
