M-sport brake pads

While I love my m-sport trim package on my 328i, the brake pads that come with it are noisy and grabby. As I approach a stop, the brakes make a horrible sound once I get below about 5mph. It sounds like an old truck braking.

Before I took my car in for service this morning I researched this forum to see if anybody has been successful getting BMW to correct the problem; cleaning, replacing pads, ?? No luck.

So, I'm talking with my SA today and explaining the noise to him. He told me BMW is well aware of complaint and it is common with high performance brake pads like the ones used with the M-sport brakes. Therefore, they don't view it as a defect.

I told my SA that I think BMW's position stinks. I've never had a car or heard another car sound like this while stopping. Here's hoping my SA can work some magic and get a brake pad change approved. I'm not counting on it. If he doesn't, I'm going to have too bite the bullet and pay for it myself.

Hello, I have the same brakes as you.
I had the brake pads CHAMFERED by my BMW dealer. I had the same issue loud noise when braking and it took 2 trips for the mechanic to even look deep into the problem. The mechanic CHAMFERED(rounded the edges) and the noise has gone away. Once in a while I'll hear noise but its usually when the pads are cold.
Is this the only solution I'm not sure but it worked for me. it's been over 7 months of not hearing the loud braking noise.
good luck...

Use your breaks a little harder and they won't squeak in the future. Mine have never squeaked.

Thanks for the information. Did they charge you? If so, can you remember how much?

I hear that is a solution. I recently went on a road trip and braked hard a few times. The noise went away. I'm back in town for 1 week and the noise is back.

I wasn't charged at all, its part of the brake service.

Do you have grooves in your rotor?

When I was soloing my STI, I bought track pads with a high metal content. These squealed when I braked lightly but bit hard and were quiet when I braked hard. I have an M-sport package with larger discs and they are quiet so far. However, if they have a high metal content, they might squeal unless BMW has anti-squeal shims in back of the pads.

Do I need to change to rotors too? That used to be BMW standard but I don't even think they follow that policy anymore.

I was only mentioning it because when I had my e90 it would make a little chirping sound, sort of like a goose cackle when I came to a stop. It turned out to be a groove in the rotor, probably from debris at some point. The dealer would not change it saying the rotor thickness was find and it did not pose any safety issue.

My SA said that pads and rotors have to be all changed at the same time. My brake light came on two weeks ago and brought the car in. While the pads were fine the rotors were at minimum so they changed everything.

I had the same problem. Horrible squeaking noise from my M Sports brake. Dealer told me the same thing, it is known issue with performance brake.
But they cleaned the brake pads (removed sharp edges) and then treated with some chemical (not sure what it was) and now the squeaking is gone. It almost 2 months now. I heard 1-2 times in last 2 months compare to everyday.
It was fixed under warranty.

Thank you for the information. Can you tell me the name of the dealer? I'm obviously not going to Florida to get it fixed but I would like to share the story with my SA and see if he is willing to step up.

If you are street only and your car is pretty new I think you can just swap the pads and call it a day
