Oil consumption...or lack there of

I've now put over 2500 mi. on this beast since the 1200 mi. service, and I'm amazed on that I haven't had to add a drop of oil, especially with a new engine. I'm used to having to add a quart every 1.5-2k mi. with my M5. Impressive.

The N55 is a much different and pedestrian beast in comparison to the S63 in the M5, or any S engine for that matter.

The reliability of the N55 is part of why I like the idea of the M2 so much

My F30 N55 is the same, has not burned a drop in the last 4 years, great engine! Now we get the souped up version with a high end factory tune, great oil supply and additional stock cooling. Enter the ///M2.

I just wish it had a dipstick for peace of mind.

You can check the oil level without opening the hood on the onboard computer, engine has to be operating temperature for it to work though, but it takes some getting used to if your a dipstick guy...no pun intended That used to be me, now do not miss it at all. Hood only gets opened at the dealer and for cleaning.

Electronic oil level is not as accurate as a dipstick since it looks at an average level. If the car burns a 1/4 quart you will never know.

Exactly this,

Not that I'm questioning the reliability of the N55 but there have been instances where an element of doubt has been set with electronic oil measurement. For example you can do two successive readings and they can be different, which one is accurate ?
There have also been instances of the electronic reading showing OK, only for it to change it's mind a few miles up the road advising of a low oil level and subsequent top up required.

It wouldn't have harmed at the design stage to have included a dipstick.

Perhaps the car was engineered like this for a reason, it does carry 6.5l of oil which is a lot for a 3.0l engine, and would probably trigger an add oil light once you are around a liter down by design. Yes, a dipstick would be great but they've taken it out and forced us to trust their system.
I personally have never had an add oil light come on and I only change the oil when the car tells me to, which is a long time, longer than I'm used to that's for sure. I've had Audi's and VW's and they all required regular top ups before oil changes, a liter every 3000k .

My s65 M6 was the same - loved its oil, maybe a litre every 3,000 miles!

My previous M135's N55 never needed a drop, although i did run them in earlier. A lot on the UK forum who ran them in gently needed oil after 10k.

Mine was the same 187000 klms never a drop between oil changes.

Nursing these cars is possibly counter productive

Never noticed any oil consumption before but now at 32k miles I noticed that after about 3500 miles on the car the electronic reading had the oil halfway between min and max, which I had never seen before. It never asked me to add oil, but I added about 300ml and it went back to max.

I did follow engine break in, but I have been driving it harder lately.

What oils do you all use? I have the same 2017 M2, and just switched to Mobil 1 FS 0W-40. It is soooo much cheaper than the BMW oils which goes at $10 / L.

I am kinda moving toward 5-6k interval instead of the BMW 10k ones too. I never checked in at 10k either but it doesn't make any sense to have a 370hp machine at 10k with mix of highway + city?

Also, there are lots of debates on 'the best engine oil', and it almost made me feel like so many people just never drive except reading data sheet and using single data point of lab test and complains like they are the professional who engineered the oil. None of them seem to ever own a car more than 3 years, and so what's all that heat about anyways?
