340i Oil

What are my options when choosing oil? My go to was Mobil 1 but they are no longer certified.. Would this really void my warranty? How could they tell it was Mobil 1 if they tested the oil.

I see online you can buy the BMW oil but was wondering if there was any off the shelf oils I could buy at my local Wal-mart that meet certification.

Dealer oil is high tech Shell product, cheap, and readily available. At this time there's no compelling reason to use another oil.

M1 0w-40 is probably still satisfactory, but it's an old spec (LL01) so Mobil probably didn't see any sense into getting it certified. Besides BMW released a new spec (0w20 oils) (LL16FE?)

Compare to Pennzoil 5W-40

I would love to see the spec comparison between the BMW Shell oil and the Pennzoil recommended Platinum EURO 5W-40 for the N55 engine.
.
Why the viscosity difference between BMW Shell oil and the Shell Pennzoil??

The BMW Turbo Oil 0W-30 or 5W-30 where Penn Site recommends 5W-40
.
The cleaning power of Pure is the way to go.

The move to 0W-20 is purely for fuel economy and while it maybe be spec there is absolutely no fucking way I'd run that oil in an engine I was driving hard like AutoX or track days. Awful choice unless all you do is drive back and forth to work.

plenty of LL01 oils still out there.

Redline 5W-30
Total Quartz Ineo 5W-30
Motul 8100 Xcess 5W-40
Castrol Euro 5W-30

Both are from Shell's GTL refinery (BMW is for sure). It's definitely high tech and it caught Mobil 1 flat footed as they're just now coming out with their own GTL.

Shell isn't going to sell a BMW certified 30w as it's silly to do so since they sell it via the dealership.

Per the Pennzoil website: 5W-30 & 5W-40 are both LL-01

5W-30 Penn EURO Plat is indeed LL-01 however they recommend 5W-40 for the N55 engine ~ so that is what I am using. Although I am thinking of mixing (4)Quarts 5W-40 + (3) Quarts 5W-30 PLAT EURO

Best oil is Liqui-moly.

Currently using it on my F30 335i and the engine is extremely quiet at idle, currently FBO minus FMIC.

My Opinion

Oil is a debated topic and each climate and engine differences warrant different viscosities.
.
My experience with my N54 engine: where I changed the oil with M1 0W40 every 5k miles & installed a BMS catch can and a RB PCV valve still experienced heavy intake valve deposits. When I replaced the Valve cover I found the engine to be extremely clean and the engine ran smoothly until the valve build-up became a restriction. SO, I switched to a Grp V oil (Redline 5W-30) due to its inherent cleaning properties , high heat stable capabilities & at the recommendation of Mike Miller. The NAOCK was less than 6% and things did improve. New car and 2 yrs later.

Today, I have the N55 in the M235i platform and the I am after a LL-01 oil, not an LL-04 oil & an oil that supports intake valve cleanliness. BMW (I believe) was in pursuit of the same goal & turned to Shells PURE PLUS technology which not only has a low NOACK, clean burning & meets LL-01. My understanding that it is far superior in terms of cleanliness than current offerings from M1 & Castrol.

Not surprised because it's all about marketing and product placement. We've guessed that the dealer oil is re-branded EURO. Shell pulled it from the shelves in most of not all big box parts houses.

You can probably order it online, but you're going to have a hard time finding the 30w with LL01 on the label at AAP/AZ/NAPA etc.

Castrol did the same thing. They didn't sell a 5w30 LL01 retail. It was 0w30 and 4w30

I was told the 0-20 and 0/30 were because when when they were going through epa testing its what they ran in the engines and used 5-30 in production and got caught. Now they have to use 0/20
