Warning dont buy salvaged/rebuilt car in ny

hey guys,

If you buy outstate salvaged/rebuilt car like in CT... then bring it too NY to register.... your in for hell.

i spent 2 hrs... in the DMV.... only to find out you need to do a salvage inspection. basically there checking for stolen parts...

in addition i think you can get screwed if the previous owner install expensive parts like air bags and you don't have recipts... the NYS inspection division will make you buy new ones!!!!

its total bs... now i a scrambling to get the car inspected... so i can drive it to the inspection site... otherwise you gotta tow to inspection location.

and just to get a title....

then u need to goto the DMV and get registered...

so here the process

1) goto dmv pay sales tax.
2) apply for salvage inspection in the mail
3) wait for the appointment (1 to 2 months)
4) get there somehow either drive or tow
5) get the title in the mail
6) go back to dmv to get it registered!!!!!!

RISK: if you have no reciepts for major repairs... which you prob don't cause your doing private party deal.

one good thing is if its NYS salvage title... you don't have to do anything cause previous guy went through this hell already....

That isn't just NY, I'm sure other states have similar inspections. I bought a salvaged honda many years ago in California (theft recovery), and after I got it all back together and running, I needed to get a brake, light, and safety inspection done before I could register it.

Got it all done in one afternoon and got my tags the next day.

It's a better bet just to buy a car with clean title. You will never know the full extent of the car's history with rebuilt/salvage title

I bought my car form iaai and the registration process was a pain, in cali you have to get temporary tags so you can drive the car around for a day and you have to get a brake and light inspection, smog and youre supposed to get a highway patrol inspection and provide recipes but the when i wnt tonthe dmv they inspected my car for me and when I got out the receipts they said they don't need them but the lady did go around the car and make sure every vin number was intact and hadn't been tampered with, I went inside payed my sales tax and got my plates that day

In SC you dont have to do anything since there is no inspection. I believe the states has annual inspections will make you
go through the process you talking about. That being said, i dont know if other states would give you that much hard time. Consider them they are looking after your and the public safety by taking those steps.

All I had to do in OK for my '06 325 was take my salvage title to a tag agency and get it converted to a rebuilt title. It was old enough it didn't need a VIN inspection. I also bought a salvage 2008 F-150 and did the same thing. Some states are more difficult than others.

This. The thread title could just be "Warning dont buy salvaged/rebuilt car" - at least, if you're looking to get any money out of it when you're done with it. That's been the experience of my friends, trying to private party a rebuilt/salvage car, it's a lowballer's market...

I wonder how this would/could be handled if the car purchased was going to be a donor car (for parts-n-such) and therefore not being put back onto the road? Guess it's best to contact your local DMV before doing that

Every state has their own unique laws governing this. However, in most cases you would still be on the hook for title transfer and excise tax but you could just leave the title in salvage indefinitely. The VIN inspections really only apply when you want to get a rebuilt title.

Its really not that hard... as long as you have receipts for anything and know what happened to the car. If you can show the exact damage and prove what needed to be fixed that is good enough. But things like airbags can definitely get dicey, because in NY you cannot use used airbags, unless of course no one knows.. It sucks when you are caught off-guard for sure though.

You should have done your home work before hand. Nothing wrong with buying a salvage car in NY. I bought 2 in the early 90's and went thru the process with no problems.

no its not a safety inspection.. its theft inspection.. see if your car has the right vin codes. on all door etc. i wouldn't mind if it happened that day... instead of bs u have to go through..

dmv to pay for tax... then they give paperwork.
but u may of may not be available to drive it there...
but wait u call up 1800 line suppose to open from tue to fri... but do high call volume we only take calls on wed !?!?

then its like month or so wait... cause it has to get scheduled...

jeez i am just glad i did it for a beater...
if you did bought a rebuilt bimmer and brought it ny... you better hope it didnt have major damage air bags deployed... your screwed...

the chances of you having recpts for new air bags is nill...

He is still correct, you should've done your homework.

Any salvage car in NY has to go thru the salvage inspection and get the rebuilt title.

Sucks, that you had to learn the hard way unfortunately.

Rebuilt = previous salvage from theft recovery, flood, total, etc..
If a car was previous salvage NY does salvage inspection. Obviously you know this now.

I don't think CT or NJ has the salvage inspection as NY does.

I know PA you can just take the car to any inspection station (gas station w.e) and you're good to go they don't check for stolen/used parts.

Not looking to argue just letting you know.

Why register it? Is anyone going to notice as long as you don't get pulled over? I see dozens of cars in my area parked on the street with long expired tabs, out of state plates from years ago. Some people even bend the corner of the plate over the tabs so they're hidden. I've seen vehicles stay like that for months with people living in them and they're never ticketed or towed. Registration is more of a suggestion than a requirement anymore.

Every vehicle needs to be registered otherwise it can be considered stolen. Next thing your going to say is everyone drives around with no insurance.

This is great advice! Cops never look at tags when they are patrolling around looking for the next doughnut shop. Even if they could be bothered to pull someone over for failing to register the citation is only a suggestion anyway. No big deal.
