ATF Fluid recommendation/confirmation for GM Transmission

Hi,

I have a 2007 E90 328Xi and am approaching 100k Miles. Already got the filter and just need to confirm which fluid to use.

Based on the research I've done, different people recommend different things.

I have used Valvoline Max life Full Synthetic on all of my other cars so far with great results. It's $20 bucks for 4 qts so the price is best out there.

It does state Dextor VI on it, which I believe is what GM transmissions use.

Has anyone used this fluid? What would you recommend?

PS. Would like to go with synthetic.

I currently have no problems with the transmission.

TIA

Look into Amsoil. If you buy a membership, you get 25% off all of their products.

They make every fluid for our cars except transaxle fluid. That you will have to buy from BMW or an online retailer like FCP or ECS for example. Very expensive - $45-65 for a Qt.

If your at 100k, you should do a complete fluid overhaul.

Also, change the spark plugs, coils, belts and pulleys too.

Valvoline maxlife works great in the GM transmissions. I use it in my ZF and it meets all the bmw specs. Pretty versatile fluid, no complaints.

Unless you are planning on doing a complete fluid flush (not a fluid and filter change), I would suggest using the OEM BMW automatic transmission fluid. For the few bucks you might save per quart, why take a chance on mixing brands of automatic transmission fluid.

Went with genuine GM stuff. No issues 11k miles after fluid/filter change.

I used Dextron VI (I think it was the BMW branded fluid). It's what GM/BMW recommends, so I don't see why there's a question about what to use.

IMO GM transmissions are tough, and you will get zero benefit from using another fluid. Some people say it might feel different, but it will not make it last any longer.

Valvoline MaxLife is not actually a licensed Dexron VI fluid. It's a good fluid and Valvoline themselves claim that it will work in Dex VI applications, but it's not actually certified for it.

Valvoline does make an actual Dexron VI. That's what I used in mine and it works great. Here it is on Amazon, it's not too much more expensive than MaxLife: https://www.amazon.com/Valvoline-VV3...=1&*entries*=0

You can find the official list of licensed Dex VI fluids here: http://www.gmpowertrain.com/VehicleE...DEXRON-VI.aspx

I considered getting this one: https://www.amazon.com/Havoline-2265.../dp/B00M1Y3KZA but it was out of stock when I was buying my fluid. It's also officially licensed so it should work fine, and it's definitely the least expensive you'll find.

However Red Line itself doesn't even claim that D4 is suitable for the 6L45, so go for the D6 if you want Red Line.

For anyone else that might be looking for differential fluid, my local BMW motorcycle dealership had it way cheaper than the car dealership. They sell it as Final Drive Gear Oil, but it's the same SAF-XO as the differential oil. It was something like $20/liter instead of $50 at the car dealership.
