What brake fluid to buy? Do we E9 drivers have a preferred brand?

It's all so confusing. Is it Dot 4? or 5.1 Full synthetic? Should the heat range be considered? How much fluid would I buy for a flush/fill?
What should I do to my know -it -all neighbor who added 2-3 ounces of Pentosin CHF 11S to my brake fluid reservoir? I thought that was for power steering only.
Anyway, my wife is tired of being a "pedal pusher" ( HA HA ) so I want to go the Motive route. All tips on fluid extraction and bleeding appreciated.

Hey put CHF11S in the brake reservoir? Uh, that's not good.

When it fucks up the braking system, send him the bill. Get that shit out of there ASAP!

Our cars call for a low viscosity DOT 4 brake fluid.

Pentosin does make it: Dot4LV

http://www.pentosin.net/f_brakefluid.asp

ATE also makes a suitable LV fluid: SL.6

Just changed mine this past weekend I bought 2 bottles of motul rbf 600 they are 500ml a bottle and it's dot 4. The job is very easy, with a fluid extractor suck out all the fluid in the reservoir and fill with new. Then there is the old fashion way of having two people to bleed the breaks or you can get a pressure bleeder. I have only done it with the pressure bleeder you fill the bottle with the new fluid and pump it to a certain psi (I did 10 psi) and then just crack the bleeder until the new fluid starts coming out.

I decided to go with BMW dot 4 to remove the guesswork. I believe it is a synthetic dot 4 LV....wait a sec you're joking, is your neighbor going to pay to replace your system? Put it this way, everyone under the sun says you only need 3 12 oz. bottles, I used 5. This implies I wasted 2 but must have really flushed it good. Maybe you should get 5 bottles (they're $4 ea hardly anything to worry about)...

I used the Motive black label and I didn't put fluid in the Motive, I just used it to pressurize the system (so I didn't have to clean it out)...worked great. Also used a single motive catch can, nice because you can see how much came out.

Any good quality DOT 4 is fine because they all have to meet a wet and dry boil standard. As long as you bleed it well after replacing it you should be good.
There is no real special racing brake fluid that makes sense for a road car unless you track it then you need to change fluid after every race...

If you haven't run the car, you may can pump out the fluid in the reservoir and get the CHF11S out without needing a flush of the entire system.

Otherwise, take it to the dealer for a flush and send your neighbor the bill.

Turkey master out the reservoir and flush a couple times with the proper stuff.

Hopefully the pentosin is lighter than the brake fluid and is floating.

OP, an E9 is a 1968 - 1975 2-door coupe...

It's not confusing, just get DOT 4 brake fluid. DOT 4 is a specification, so any DOT 4 brake fluid will meet the spec.

I use Pentosin BF-DOT4LV, make sure it is LV - low viscosity, http://www.pentosin.net/f_brakefluid.asp. I order it from O'Reilly Auto Parts

When I flush my brake fluid every two years I use 2 liters of brake fluid with the Motive Bleeder.

This. I prefer a synthetic DOT 4 option and use Castrol. The only difference between the various DOT 4 brands is the boiling temp. All DOT 4 labeled brake fluids meet the minimum temp, but some go far above it which makes them better for track duty.

Do NOT use DOT 5 fluid (silicone based).

I use ATE for everything I own. It's reasonably cheap and delivered to my door from various sources.

As above, never use dot5.

Yep, I'm going to go the Motive bleeder route with the Dot 4LV Pentosin and send my neighbor the bill. Thanks for the input. BTW, I didn't realize there was an actual Bmw E9 model 1968-75.
