Trouble with front tow hook

Hi all-

First post! Just got back into a BMW having a 2 year hiatus. (Had a company car, wasn't driving my BMW so sold the E46.)

First thing I wanted to do while waiting for my Bentley manual was to install a front plate. PO (original owner) never drilled the front bumper and I don't want to mess that up. So, bought a tow hook mount. Problem is, I can't screw the damn thing in! So, I tried the actual tow hook - no dice on that either! I am, however, able to screw them both into the rear tow hook mount. So, at least I know it's not the hardware at fault.

Looking at the receptacle, there's a little corrosion so I sprayed with PB Blaster and have been at it with a soft-ish wire tubular brush but no luck.

Anyone have any ideas how I can get this thing in?

Here's a pic:

It does look like the threads are closer together than on the rear, but I don't know if that's just the corrosion talking.
