Muffler delete

Any forum members with this mod? Love it? Regret it?

I've seen some YouTube videos showcasing the sound and it's pretty nice. I know I will lose low-end torque. I want a nicer rumble in the exhaust without breaking the bank, so I'm thinking of taking the 330 to the muffler shop tomorrow.

My only concern is that it might be TOO loud-- I don't want to piss off my neighbors or local police officers. If anybody has any comment on that, I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance.

I am, in fact, serious.

Is there something extremely blasphemous about a muffler delete? Or am I crazy for thinking it will be too loud? Please do elaborate

Almost everyone here has done it lol. YouTube has dozens of videos on it. I believe there's also a thread dedicated to exhaust sound media. Me personally, I had mine put back on after a week. I hated the sound.

Got it. Yeah, I've seen the videos, but it's very hard to use them to judge if the end result is going to be loud or LOUD.

Thanks for your input, though. You say you hated the sound-- I'm guessing that has nothing to do with the volume, but rather, the actual character of the exhaust note post-muffler delete?

No, the volume was also an issue. It droned and I definitely didn't want that either. I've done as loud as you can go, I had straight pipes on my e46. So until I decide to go with an actual exhaust system, I'd rather keep it stock.

I have a muffler delete on my 06 325 and for starters it's really not that loud it's loud but it's not to loud if you know what I mean. I kinda wish it was louder but I'm 17 so my judgment of loud is probably a bit different then most of the members here.

In terms of how it's sounds well under 3.5 k it's sounds very rich and deep but after that it's sound like a screeming whistle and sounds like complete and utter shit. But for me it's still fun to make it crack and Pop and can sound good in certain situations. However if you can afford a real exhaust do one.

I drive mostly city so I think I can live with the drone. (I hope.) If it's not what I wanted, I'll take it back to the muffler shop and undo everything.

That's the thing, I can't afford a real exhaust Yeah I just want to see if it will make the sound more interesting, at the very least. Your comment about the exhaust note after 3.5K is concerning, though-- is it really that bad, or you just wish it was a little better?

Cool

I have it, it's not that loud, but if your muffler flap does not rattle on startup and doesn't have any similar issues I would just leave it alone... Save up for a PE.

Probably a better option, but owning a BMW is not cheap to begin with... I like to keep the cost low where I can.

What's the price like on a Genuine BMW PE? Is it worth buying used?

Maybe you can do something like the PE exhaust mod for the 330i (popular 335i mod that emulates the BMW Performance exhaust)? Basically it's just replacing some perforated pipe inside the muffler with straight pipe, but keep some of it and the baffling materials so it still keeps the drone down and the volume reasonable.

Can you provide a link for this? I am interested.

You don't have a 335i. I'm almost positive the mufflers on a 335 are completely different than a 330 and will def not be the same thing.

You can google "Modifying the stock exhaust to sound like the BMW Performance Exhaust" but it's for the E9x 335i.

Your exhaust is different but the same idea is followed on other cars too so something similar might be possible here.

Had mine done few months ago. Gives a nice sound but nothing over the top for a 328. I'm even thinking of getting my resonator deleted. And its not permanent you can always put it back on if you dont like the sound.

Deleting the muffler is a cheap way to change the sound of your exhaust but it can produce some drone.

I bought an after market stainless steel exhaust for my 335i a while back, the fiberglass packing inside the mufflers started coming apart so I had to cut the mufflers out, and now I'm pretty much straight piped... This thig is ridiculously loud, pops like an SRT-4 when it revs down, shoots some 3ft flames when I shift while sounding like a shotgun going off... Cold start is super loud (measured 105 decibels 6ft behind the rear bumper) and my neighbors hate me...

Everyone always compliments me on the way the car sounds (except my neighbors), but I am looking at putting resonators to quiet it down... The drone going up hill at 80mph is unbearable.

There's a neighbor at my condo complex who has a E90 335 without mufflers and his sounds pretty good. It's actually not unbearably loud compared to other cars (Non-BMW) I have heard with very loud exhausts.

I haven't decided one way or the other yet. I live in a quiet residential area and I go out at night pretty often, so for the time being, I'd rather avoid pissing off my neighbors. A louder exhaust would be nice but probably attract some unwanted attention (neighbors, police, etc)

On the 335i with a straight pipe, it sounds super loud on cold start because the wastegates remain open for about a minute, then after the wastegates close, the exhaust is really not that loud at idle/low rpm.

I was thinking of a muffler delete too but after considering, I think I'll be doing a straight through (glass pack) muffler next week instead.
