BMW Extended Warranty

Does anyone know have experience with the PLATINUM extended warranty? I was quoted $3,750 for an additional 3 years/up to 100K miles. Is it worth getting?

You didn't say if that was 84/70k or 84/100k, but from MSRP prices I've been given last week, the PLATINUM is close to 13% over the GOLD MSRP.

Shop Around.

Its a new car. The price I was quoted was $3,750 for 84/100 PLATINUM. Does anyone have experience using this warranty and is it worth getting?

For my VIN(2013 328i) the Platinum 7-yr/100k is $3160 MSRP before 10k miles, and then $3540 MSRP after 10k miles. The 4-series can be of different prices, but do get the MSRP from F&I, my guess is $3750 has some markup above MSRP.

Do read the extended service contract(ESC) coverage on bmwusa.com. These ESCs are not the same as bumper-to-bumper new car warranty, and it costs $50 per claim.

Your original said that price was for GOLD, not PLATINUM, then you edited and took out the reference to GOLD....and now say PLATINUM in the post I quoted.

You do realize you have up to 48 months to buy it?

Prices(at least for MY16 and before) of ESCs do increase after first 10k miles and/or 1st year.

Fwiw, I also have 2013 AH3 (closer to 335) and ESC PLATINUM 7YR/100k MSRP is $4380.

With 2 engine systems, I am sure there is more to go wrong.

Also, fwiw, my car is under 10k miles - so no idea if mine was priced over or under.

Spoke with several BMW Dealers and None ever asked mileage.

It does make sense ESCs of AH3 are more expensive than 328i/428iGC ones. The prices of 328i and 428iGC can be close, one way to confirm is to ask F&I to print out per VIN(with current mileage) MSRPs of all ESCs.

The F&I guy showed me a screen asking for VIN and mileage to pull up the MSRP prices from BMWNA. It can be possible that the F&I can enter an estimate mileage(given a MY13 very likely has more than 10k miles).

I have in my hand the Confidential 4 Page DAVIS Printout with all records and data - as well as MSRP pricing for all 3 MP and 18 ESC Plans for my car.

Nowhere is mileage entered in as a factor.

The only Mileage info is in the Repair History of the car and the last one on 5/27 was at 7,307.

As the car could be over 10k now, one would expect that would be asked or entered somewhere to get the prices

The VIN and mileage are needed if the key is absent(e.g. remotely), but if data is read from the key, the current mileage will be available.

One possibility is that the VIN is sufficient to access the report history, and they use the mileage of the last visit of the repair history for the quotes(which are estimates)

When the ESCs are actually purchased the F&I guys still need the current mileage by reading the key.

Confirmed with out of state dealer. No key fob needed. They are happy to sell ESC.

Also asked today. There is a flat $400 off the MSRP if under 10k miles.

System uses mileage on last Service and calculates off that mileage, even if months ago.

Yes for my VIN there are $380 differences between pre-10k and post-10k on all ESCs.

Maybe there are west coast dealers that will do no-key approach, or just need to hook up with east coast ones remotely.

If the system can just take VIN it will be a quick 5-minute job for any F&I to add thousands to their books.

So do east coast dealers offer any discount off MSRP?

So how much should I offer the dealership? They quoted me $3,750 which seems high. Thanks, I didn't know it was negotiable! Again its the PLATINUM level of coverage for additional 3 years(84/100).

The one downside of BMW extended service contracts is that they are inclusive and cover far less than the new-car bumper-to-bumper warranty, plus the max duration is 7 years(while past bimmer experience is that repairs do not usually start until 8+ years).

There are online reference that says on average ESCs pay $0.50 per $1 of premium collected, so for a $3k ESCs, the service departments generate $1500 of business, while BMWNA gets $1000, and the F&I makes $500, looks like a good deal for BMWNA and dealers.

There another one not that far away.
It depends, e.g. RV and base % are non-negotiable with dealer.

As for ESC prices, no dealer will go below cost, but some ask for markup above MSRPs on unsuspected customers.

So I called another BMW dealership today and I was quoted the same $3,750 for 7/100k coverage. The 7/70k quote was $3,350. Both are PLATINUM level of coverage. I think for $400 more its worth the extra 30,000 miles of coverage even though I don't plan to drive more than 10k miles per year. I was told the price is non-negotiable and regulated by the State of Florida. I am planning to go with the 7year/100k miles platinum coverage. Any thoughts?
