Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2, AKA Moly) Additive

I'm normally an anti-additive person, but moly appears to be very promising. I been looking into it as an additive to use once per oil change, and have been doing a lot of research. It appears to be very popular in the BMW community. Does anyone else use it? Have you run into any problems with your cats or O2 sensors?

What oil do you use now?

BMW LL-01 oil already has some in it.

Why do you think you need more? Are you going to try to go 30K mile OCI? When have you read of an oil-related engine failure on recent BMWs?

I added a can of the Lubri-Moly MoS2 to my car. I've used it in the past with other cars.

I use it with every oil change on all my cars. Throw a bit in with the diff fluid as well. Can't hurt.

In all my years of driving, I have never had a car that burns any oil, hell, have never had an oil leak. And most cars I drive to 300k or so.

Must be doing something right.

I've heard of people throwing some into the tranny also.

That I would absolutely NOT do. Syncros need some friction to work.

Engine and diffs though (except LSD), the less friction the better.

This

I have recommended it to a lot of people. Not sure how many take me up on the suggestion. When you tear into a lot of motors and internals you begin to get a clear picture of what works and what doesn't.

A little extra of this is not a bad thing.

Liqui-Moly-2009-Anti-Friction-Treatment is one example.

BTW, it is fine in MANUAL transmissions. Not auto.

Why not give it a shot and when you change your oil get an oil analysis?

I use BMW's LL-01. I have no specific reason to use it beyond a longevity experiment. I plan on keeping my car for well over 10 years, so it will be interesting to see the effects of moly.

Don't use additives. BMW states that right in the manual. By using moly, you are diluting the primary antiwear additive (zddp) and increasing deposits.

Well, one thing that will happen is sooner replacement of your catalysts, due to the additional sulfur that will speed contamination of them.

Engineering (of these engines, including fluids) is a trade-off; your choice though.

Not very scientific but interesting to watch (Redline vs. Amsoil vs. Motul) in minus 30 degree weather.
