What is the giant black "box" under driver side rear
Is this an emission box?
Can we remove it?

Driver's rear? Or passenger side? If it's the black plastic box looking thing under the splash shield, at the passenger side rear, then that would be your charcoal filter canister. I wouldn't recommend removing that as you will get a check engine light. The DMTL pump also lives on that as well. The plastic box closer to the middle of the vehicle is the bottom of the trunk compartment storage well.

@heeltoe, it's this box. This box before HAD a rubber black hose coming out of it and was for my exhaust flapper. But I don't have stock exhaust anymore.

The charcoal canister is what GARTOB8 said, a vapor filter. It's an emissions device that helps vehicles emit less hydrocarbons from fuel. Basically there is a brick of activated charcoal inside that holds vapors until the system allows it to purge the vapors into the combustion chamber. Unfortunately, this is a fairly essential component in the tank venting system and will throw codes. Also, in some states, I have heard that it is illegal to "modify," or delete emissions components. Not too sure which ones, as I am not a resident in the southern 50. So If I have to tell you keep it or trash it, I'd have to go with keep it. |

Alot of cars had it under the hood instead
It is a harmless piece of emmissions equipment that does not hurt performance at all Only benefit to remove it would be weight savings and that is not worth it and you would have the task into make everything work correctly with the fuel tank without it and you would have a permanent check engine light |
